I was hoping to tag two questions onto the Stansted history and nostalgia thread but it seems to have been archived. Firstly does anybody recall which Hangers Skyways of London used when they moved to Stansted from Bovingdon?

I've searched the web and looked through the Three books on the airfield with limited success. One volume shows a York outside a black T2 Hanger which has a water tower attached to the adjacent nissen hut.

The other question concerns Britannia 312 G-AOVC who's final operator was Donaldson. The aircraft arrived at STN late in 1970 and was fairly quickly consumed by the BAA Fire Service training School. Does anbody have any photographs they are able to share of the aircraft at Stansted.

Thanks in advance,

JB

Before my time, but as far as I know Skyways occupied three hangars at STN, two were on the south side and included several other buildings, used as workshops. They were later used by Transmeridian, Air Atlantique and as cargo sheds. The other was north side and was used as their flight shed. That hangar is still standing and is the last T2 on the airfield, now used by Inflite.

Many thanks GAZIN for the reply that clears up the question nicely.

Many thanks SWBKCB. The Brit facing away from the camera is definitely G-AOVJ Ex Caledonian Airways. The other Bristol on the Right hand edge of the frame could well be VC or possibly 5Y-AYR. The fire school seemed to have a healthy appetite for the whispering giant. I guess a lot of the airframes were coming to the end of their service lives during that period.

There is a rather splendid picture of Skyways AVRO 685 YORK C1, G-AGNM, parked outside the now Inflite T2 at STN on the Air Britain site. Photo is dated 1958. Photo is copyright, so have not re-produced it here, but worth a look.

Thank you TCU. I've found the picture, very atmospheric. I believe the York at Cosford is Ex Skyways. The company certainly got their moneys worth out of them with the trooping contracts and cargo sub charters for BOAC.
