Some of us old-timers had the privilege of doing our flying instructor courses with the inestimable Joan Hughes. A remarkable lady, too modest to boast about her illustrious career in aviation. First solo aged 15, wartime service in the ATA, film work (including Those Magnificent Men and Blue Max).

In the restaurant at White Waltham there's a photo of the diminutive Joan dwarfed by a Stirling bomber, one of the many types she flew.
