Totally disappearing to the events of Mowgli and Ex Fast Jets have described on this day in 1982, it is also the day that the only RAF Jaguar ever to be shot down and the only RAF Phantom ever to shoot down a manned aeroplane happened. XX963 chopped up by a 9 Golf fired from XV422. Steve Griggs account is in the Jaguar Boys of course.

During his time on 43, he had been instructed on arrival by the Scottish officer that in no account was he to discuss the event. The same officer had also removed all copies of the BOI summary report (remember those?), presumably in case there was any guilt by association or that it might be infectious.
The arrival of a slightly bent gun barrel turned into a standard lamp by the Bruggen team was just too much for him… 🤣

And only because the pilot is known to many of us, unlike your anonymous friend's anonymous wife... I would add that I worked alongside him and always found him to be amongst the very kindest and nicest of people. For an air defender, obviously!

Yup one of our squadrons, having collected his tie he then banged out again in Sept of the same year and rumours were flying about he was after a matching suit.
Hence forth I used to have to wander round the Sqn site at endex to boroscope the back end of the all the engine bypass casings to ensure no cracks around one of the welds.

Lots of us were still Flt Lt’s at a great age. Some by choice!

Re 'Davef68'' comment - was it ever resolved whether a Javelin shot down an Indonesian C130 (flown by Dr Subandrio's son) into the Straits of Malacca or whether the aircraft was flown into the sea during the chase.? The aircraft was one of three dropping parachutists at Labis (central west Malaysia) at night and it was returning after completing the drop.

Certainly in Borneo an Indonesian C130 crashed at Long Bawan (south of Bakalalan) whilst being chased until it crossed over the border. At the time, it was said that the crew and those pax who were in the aircraft survived but several Indonesians who jumped out did not.

I was in the 'cage' at RAFG when the door burst open and the Jag and F4 Staff Officers burst in with 'you are going to get some phone calls, no comment'. Next mornings Morning brief was tense to say the least.

I believe that there was a formation of F104s inbound behind them and the leader called the attack off because “The Brits are playing it for real today!”.
