Hello all,
lately I’ve had jaw pain and difficulty breathing, the jaw specialist recommended I see a psychiatrist for anxiety, will anxiety get me fired or unable to renew my medical? What should I do? Help would be appreciated
In my opinion medical renewal is not the place to solve health issues, specially in this part of the world. Not only anything wont be solved there but you will end up coming out of the consultation with more problems than when you arrived. My advice is to keep your mouth shut during renewals and go seek for professional help elsewhere, preferably somewhere that wont report your issues to the company.

If you are a uae national, you are well protected and I believe they will try to help you.
Personally, initially I would still stay under the radar and try to find out what is going on without EK or GCAA involvement.
Do NOT mention anything during your medical renewal as doctors are also under increased scrutiny and have limited power to keep things personal without informing the authority.

WoW ! doesn’t this thread says a lot about the EK culture without saying much……. Good luck I hope you sort your problem out.
From what I have seen in others if it is from clenching your jaw too much go talk to someone about Botox... Can help alleviate the muscles when sleep clenching.
If you currently work at EK ….the first question I would be asking myself is.. why am I anxious?

Have it treated outof your own pocket. Don't let EK know. If it is effecting your ability to safely operate , then be wise and don’t bring others in danger and quit.

I’m an ATC. Renewals are like so in-depth with GCAA. Advise we always give new hires is always tick the no boxes on existing and previous conditions. Especially the sleep apnea.
obviously if your condition affects flight safety get it attended to without company knowing. Do not give them a reason to pull the trigger.

My anxiety is more along lines of :
- prices are rising in Dubai by a lot!. Not had pay rise to keep up with inflation
- still haven’t been repaid money taken from me while working at 50% pay for 6 months.
Waiting for Emirates to address both issues,
(Fly Dubai had 18 weeks bonus to cover pay loss during COVID )

Wasn’t there a recent four week surprise bonus? Have you seen the rest of the world salaries and prices and shortage of jobs?

My anxiety is more along lines of :
- prices are rising in Dubai by a lot!. Not had pay rise to keep up with inflation
- still haven’t been repaid money taken from me while working at 50% pay for 6 months.
Waiting for Emirates to address both issues,
(Fly Dubai had 18 weeks bonus to cover pay loss during COVID )
i understand it’s being hard for you living on half pay for quite a while now and prices are going up and up.
maybe consider your glass half full as you have a job and a salary. There are around 1000 ex EK find them self not so lucky. They are living from zero pay in the same environment somewhere else in the world still having no future.
I find it outrageous if some one get anxiety over being unable to reduce his personal lifestyle to a EK 50% salary while former colleagues have still nothing not even a rejoin offer.
if you cannot survive in DXB on that kind of money having no extra costs please try a job in Europe, which u will get much easier than those who didn’t fly for last 2 years and enjoy the amazing pay cheques there or imagine how it feels to have no salary at all. while you have at least food on the table and a fancy car, there are some ex EK struggling with food and having severe financial troubles to keep their licenses and rating ( as they are paid from their own pocket) to be able to find a job.

And that’s exactly how our profession hit rock bottom, “be grateful that you are being payed half salary while there are a bunch of other people willing to fly for a third of what you make right now”. Great advice, enjoy your new lifestyle because if we depend on you to make things better we are all done.

well he is back on full pay by now, and gets anxiety being not reimbursed for a few month less pay. Particular person is back to his normal lifestyle. I see it that way, you better have a limited time half pay as investment it keeping the job, rather than have no pay and no job for ever like the redundant ones.

Didn’t the 6 months half pay period finish and go back to full pay towards the end of 2020? Then the recent 4 weeks bonus would mean equivalent of 1/2 pay for 4 months (two months total loss), its not great but as has been stated there are many former colleagues with 2 years of total loss….. zero pay and no job. Even the lucky ones who have managed to find jobs are probably on less than half what they were earning previously and with zero hope of it suddenly doubling and equally facing spiralling costs.

Most of us live in their private bubble and only care about ourselves, ..should not be a surprise I think.
I would get anxious too if I had to pay wife #1 up to #3, have kids. Pay off the loans on my dirtbike, noisy cars and other midlife crisis toys. What to dooo? Halas It is all relative.

Felix, the half-pay did indeed go back to full pay towards the end of 2020, just as the 380 crews were hit with up to a year of unpaid leave. The redundant crews were absolutely in an awful position but they at least had three months' full salary and the provident fund to tide them over and pay the bills for a while. The people on unpaid leave had to rely on savings or take out loans, which will now need repaying just as prices are rocketing up (well, rocketing up even more than they usually do in Dubai). The 4-week bonus, although welcome, wouldn't even dent the financial damage caused by living on savings and loans for up to a year and a half. The fact that other people in other parts of the world are worse off really isn't much consolation.
I suspect there may be quite a few pilots suffering from anxiety.

How about this for anxiety? Not EK but another carrier.
- 19 years of loyal work with over 15 000hrs TT
- retrenched at 25% of agreed package
-no work for two years due to Covid
-rated on A320, A330, A340, A350 but can't get a job because I haven't flown in 2 years (no right to live and work in US or EU).
-I have used my pension to survive and am now selling my house.
-Looks like I might get a job flying a C206

We know that there are a lot of redundant pilots out there many of whom will never fly again but this thread is not about that, it is specifically about one carrier and the somewhat unique challenges of working for EK and living in Dubai. It isn't a competition.

Yes you are correct. Perhaps the point I was trying to make (probably poorly), is that it's sometimes better to be a bit more appreciative of the small things you do have, as opposed to the things you don't. We are just exiting the worst downturn in our industries history. It's carnage out there.

. .Many others are in the same situation.. However, after 19 years at any decent airline, you should have enough
savings to retire with..Good luck..!!
