AAIB report S2/2021 refers to a B737 incident during a go around at Aberdeen where they unintentionally descended and accelerated when IMC. The report makes reference to the fact that during the pandemic much of the crew’s recent experience had been in the sim and comments that no simulator can adequately replicate the distractions, other aircraft and r/t environment that this crew faced in real life.
I hope that those advocating the 90/10 split read it.

To be fair to the 90/10 advocates, it is recognised that current synthetic environments are not suitable and that much greater 'richness' will need to be provided through use of AI or networked real world data. Having superannuated aircrew simultaneously acting as ATC and manually driving a handful of other aircraft around is clearly not the future.

I was involved in some early work on AI “players” who also generated synthetic voice transmissions. The problem was always getting them to respond to whatever the crew decided to do which was unpredictable ( sometimes very unpredictable). Actually, the “superannuated aircrew” solution worked better if you could get enough of them plugged in.

So "Gaming" flight sims are ahead of the game?
