Many have dubbed the demonstration, which took place at the Ebenfluh shooting range near the Axalphorn summit (7,614 feet) in central Switzerland, the finest air show ever seen.

“The program of the 2021 edition included strafing runs with F/A-18C/D Hornet (https://www.military.com/equipment/f-18c-d-hornet) fighter jets, a demo display of the Pilatus PC-21 trainer (https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/pilatus_pc-7/), a Special Forces operation, firefighting operations, and demonstrations of the flight characteristics of the Cougar helicopter and F/A-18 – a special guest in the form of the beautiful ‘Tiger’ Hunter and the Patrouille Suisse,” reported the Aviation Geek Club.

The Axalp Air Power Demonstration which derives its name from the Axalphorn peak dates back to World War II, when General Guisan proposed that both Swiss military personnel and citizens flee to the mountains, owing to the prospect of a Nazi German invasion.

Re the climb Megan, you sure?

edit

So the entire proposition sounds very inviting and a nice place to spend an Autumn afternoon. Until you hear that you have to climb all the way up the mountain. From the Axalp village yourself this is a two to three hour walk depending on your condition. Even when you take the chair lift up to Windegg, you still face a brisk climb towards the Brau hill initially. After that Tschingel awaits you before reaching the Command Point (KP) at Ebenflüh.
Axalp is very popularOver the past two decades the amount of visitors to Axalp has dramatically increased. From a few hundred, mostly local, visitors in the nineties, nowadays well over 10.000 visitors walking up.

Only a fraction of these visitors have the opportunity to use the air bridge that the Air Force sets up to transport invited guests and press up the mountain. For this purpose a half a dozen or so Super Puma and Cougar helicopters are used. The rest have to settle for the other option: walk! For the untrained mountain climber the hike up can be tough. Although it has to be said that anyone with a reasonable condition can make it in a few hours.
