A bit of a long shot but I'm sure the answer won't be long in coming.
Back in the early '70s, I read a Bomber Command crew member's account of ops and the final chapter was very critical of the way in which aircrew were treated by the RAF after the war ended. I remember him writing that many were given menial tasks while waiting for discharge and on one occasion several were killed in a billet when the floor polish they were using was ignited by a cigarette or discarded match. Particularly tragic, considering the odds they beat to survive the bombing tours of duty.
I can't remember anything of the title or the author so there's not a lot to go on.

"The Eighth Passenger" by Miles Tripp?
Seem to remember a chapter like that in it?

Not that one, Clarkie, I've got it on my bookshelf, and a very good read it is. The book I'm thinking of was a paperback, about the same size if I remember rightly. Thanks anyway.
