35 sim instructors have resigned over cuts to their already degraded conditions. Company is considering using FOs to run sims.

You get the employees you deserve. Who would of thought?
Put the worlds smallest violin on standby for next time you bump into an "overworked" STC.
"Market forces" anybody?

Good for them. I have learned a lot from you gentlemen over the years, CX was lucky to have such a talented group of professionals with so much experience.

You deserve better.

Now some of the overachieving iCadet FOs are on WhatsApp trying to get info on how they can become a SFI... The cycle continues

They don't seem to realise that SIM instructors will be in great demand as the industry recovers and all those recurrencies need doing.

I cant wait to have a 24 year old icadet sitting behind me in the sim trying to teach. I hope you guys like swiss cheese sandwiches.

The freighter Instagram queen will shortly be teaching all of us a thing or 2 soon in the sim. Sharpen up boys!

Short memories.

Was it not 10 years ago when not a single 747 instructor had actually flown a 747? One of them had never flown a jet.

Of course - we even have some of them in the house now. The Kiwi dude has never touched a 74 in his life.

Good for the instructors standing up for themselves. If more pilots took a stand, aviation would be a better place, (Covid notwithstanding).

Best to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot than to open it and remove all doubt.

First off, is this true? If so, did they do it in unison? And how many did we have to begin with?

Just as a reminder! There were a lot of utterly, outdated and crappy Sim instructors (Gweilos, minus 1 on Singaporean) back in the 2000-2010s. Not sure if some of those were cleared out over the later years. Just saying.

No not in unison. The grandfathering of their contract was for 12 months and they have slowly been departing in the lead up to that expiring. Perhaps a sign of things to come in the next 6-12 months as the pilot grandfathering expires.

All of the major union airlines in the U.S. use FOs as sim instructors. Is there some rule against that in Hong Kong?

A previous company I worked for used Training First Officers for sims - they were all taken upto TRE as part of the job. They were some of the best trainers I’ve had.

It was a good way of nurturing talent early and keeping pilots engaged when time to command was decades.

In some air forces simulator instructing was a punishment tour 😂

At least your old company had talent.

Haha

We won’t be getting an new simulator instructors any time soon as they are currently in closed loop complaining about their hotel room humidity and the fact they are getting too many G days upon completion!

I've only heard about this on this platform. I've asked fellow skippers and SFOs and no one has heard anything either.

Of course it is.

What stops you or me from starting a BS rumour about X amount of pilots/instructors doing this or that? Well, except for having something better to do with our lives of course.

You mean 35 examiners left.. not instructors. :} I thought, no teaching with CX, every time you step in the sim is a test. you pass you good for another 6 mths.

I see they’re advertising for sim instructors.

Would anyone be ask kind to share the package details etc.

Retiring from flying soon. Many thanks.

I've no idea as to the current package they're offering, but one of the listed requirements is 'Hong Kong Permanent Resident'.

The 35 sim instructors we’re not really chasing pay, they did this gig to keep themselves active. Money was not a motivator for most of them. Now for them to resign, what does that tell you about the package?

Their conditions have changed too.

Being unable to easily fly to their home countries without quarantine is a massive hit to lifestyle.

Interestingly enough, none of the 8 or so biz jet Capt vacancies in HKG require a PR (they do, however, need a type rating). Maybe they do need one, and it's simply not listed in the advert.

Sometimes, but by no means always, first officers have better knowledge than Captains and so can make good sim instructors .

Yeah right , a 25 year old has more real world experience than a seasoned Captain who goes on to become a sim instructor . There may be some exceptions, there are to every generality but I would take a seasoned sim instructor over an FO any day. This is not a criticism of F.O’s we have some excellent aviators . Just my thoughts

This is not about just "knowledge", that's more suited to math instructors.. Experience, expertise and the ability to "impart" those qualities NOT just "book knowledge is what they should be looking for re instructors.
Seems BH (and CX generally) are ok with the destruction of a meritocracy in lieu of "qualified" and known trained professional instructors... Cheap, cheap, cheap..........

Fo's with a command (not a single seat prop) in a previous life should be capable enough for sim instruction for a captain, otherwise its a hard no.
