Cathay Pacific has fired a “small number” of aircrew for failing to get Covid-19 jabs without a valid medical reason, following through on an ultimatum to review the employment of pilots and flight attendants still unvaccinated by August 31.
Today we decided to part company with a small number of aircrew who had decided not to receive either of the two available Covid-19 vaccines and had not provided proof of medical exemption,” Hong Kong’s largest airline said in a statement on Wednesday.
In a memo last month, it said only fully inoculated staff and contractors could enter its offices and buildings from December 1, while those working at the airport would have to get both jabs by October 1. It did not say whether staff who refused to get vaccinated would be fired.
Early this month, Cathay started disciplinary proceedings against dozens of flight attendants and pilots who had refused to get a jab, the Post reported.
Between 60 and 80 aircrew were in the firing line, insiders said, as the airline had begun questioning their lack of inoculation records.
As a result, the company will now take steps to terminate your employment,” the letter said.
The airline’s mandatory vaccine decision was partly influenced by moves from the Airport Authority, which said on August 20 that specific high-risk groups of workers would not be able to call upon negative coronavirus tests or medical exemptions from September 1, while also requiring all staff to get at least one vaccine dose.

One way or another, it's satisfying to see those who, only days before the #ChinaVirus was set lose on the world, were seen as "valued employees" now " MOVE ON" from what is now one of the most garbage employers in Asia & world wide !
I wish nothing but to see them prosper once they rid themselves of the toxic Cathay cesspool airline and it's management .

Complete bunch of . Along with the Hong Kong populace. Get vaccinated. Same as you had to do for yellow fever until it was almost eradicated.

If the reports of a CA with a heart condition being sacked for not getting vaccination are true, then the company was unjustified in sacking her and should be held to account. She says she isn't against vaccination, but didn't yet know if it is safe for her to get one. She had submitted medical records to company but was sacked anyway. I suggest she should have been put on sick leave until her issues were resolved.

CA with a heart condition? How can they be allowed to fly, or even be employed, with a heart condition?

If that is true about the 'heart condition' then she should want to get the vaccine right away. I mean she is more susceptible to serious complications from COVID-19. Antivaxxer? It's looking that way to me... oh and if she's in aviation then her heart problem can't be that serious.

This is from the American heart association: Should I get the vaccine if I have a history of heart disease or stroke? Yes. People with cardiovascular risk factors, heart disease, and heart attack and stroke survivors should get vaccinated as soon as possible because they are at much greater risk from the virus than they are from the vaccine, according to leaders of the American Heart Association. The AHA urges people with medical conditions to discuss vaccination with their health care team.

When the whole world is doing so but some locals prefer to wait and see.....

From what it sounds like any company over 100 employees or a company that is a government contractor will be forced to vaccinate all employees. Whilst American Airlines has so far been able to get away without requiring a vaccination they will soon have all employees vaccinated. Some will scream about their freedoms but in the end it'll be for the best. Hopefully HK takes note and can push this same thing out.

That would be a start, but they won’t open thereafter up for 2 reasons:

The old, frail duffers who need the jab won’t have it.

China won’t open up.

“Given the newly added restrictions required to enter Hong Kong, Air Canada made the decision to suspend its direct cargo and passenger operations effective September 13, 2021. As of Sunday, our flights will now make a stop in Incheon (Seoul) to allow for a crew change. As a result, our crews will no longer be laying over in Hong Kong, they will be laying over in Seoul.”

If only CX had based crew, then we could avoid HKG's excessive constraints too.
