Robbery shuts part of Gatwick

Police have closed Gatwick's perimeter road

Armed robbers have attacked a security van in a tunnel under Gatwick Airport. The raid happened at 0730 BST on Thursday, underneath the south terminal.

Police have closed part of the east perimeter road at the airport as investigations begin.

Passengers are being advised to allow more time to get to the airport, although flights are leaving on schedule.

Passengers re-directed

A spokeswoman for Sussex police said: "Our officers are investigating an armed attack on a security van.

"It is not known yet whether any money was taken or if there have been any injuries."

Meanwhile, passengers are being directed into the airport via different routes.

A spokesman for the airport confirmed there had been "no impact on flight arrivals or departures" and, with the exception of the road closure, the airport is operating normally.

How the hell did they manage to get away. Every time I've passed along this road between 0600 and 0900 it is rammed with cars, crew buses, car park buses, catering trucks, etc. It's taken up to half an hour to get from Queens gate to the roaunabout by the Cally hangers.
And another thing, the airport police station is not half a mile from the tunnel. Talk about bare faced cheek.

Usually a couple of armed cops wandering around the tunnel area as well.

Seems like the (unarmed) thief blagged a Brinks security van for around GBP250,000 worth of foreign currency.
