I picked this message up from a Facebook group that I am a member of. If anyone can help I'm sure it would be appreciated.

"Hi. I work in a charity shop in Spain and we received some donated clothing which had two medals in the pocket. They were for Cpl P A Bennington service number T1347156. It would be nice to trace his family so we can reunite them with the medals. One is his LSGM and the other a Saudi campaign medal. Please help if you can."

As a side issue, can anyone shed light on when this person might have enlisted?

Thanks

Don't know where the shop is in Spain, or even if it's an RAF Service Number but there are 3 very active branches of RAFA on the Costa Blanca who may be able to help.

LSGC would denote Service, having a letter rules out Army so only RAF remains. RM had two letters prefix up to the 8 number, all ranks, tri-service system now employed. Regards the Saudi Campaign Medal, that needs clarifying, neither Granby or Telic medals have Saudi on them, GSM 1918 has a clasp Arabian Peninsular, GSM 1962 South Arabia and GSM 2008 has Arabian Peninsular again. More info required but if nothing else, pop them in the post to;

Does "Saudi campaign medal" mean the spangly thing they gave out after GW1?

If I’m understanding this correctly, according to this site, Cpl Bennington would have joined the RAF in 1941.

Maybe but that would normally be accompanied by the Kuwait medal.

That does not mean they could have become separated though.

Yep, hence the “normally”…

The alpha 'T' check character says that he was serving in 1965 when the check character was invented.

If he joined in 1941 ish then his LSGC would have been 1959 with the bar in 1977?
Has the "Saudi Medal" got his details on - could the 2 medals be from separate people and just part of a small collection?

That could be an Army "RASC" number. The Army did not normally use a prefix for a Service number, but the Royal Army Service Corps was an exception. RASC numbers were prefixed S (Supplies), T (Transport), M (Mechanical Transport) or R (Remounts).
