Reports of a plane down near Moorabbin.
Initial reports put it on the Capital Golf course but it seems further North than that.
Looks like it was doing circuits on 35
Hopefully, all onboard are OK.

Caller to 3AW said it was EFATO into Capital Golf Course clipped trees on way in and flipped. 6 POB. At time of call, 5 were out safely, pilot still on board. Not sure how accurate this report was. Guess we'll find out soon enough. Fingers crossed all ok.

Did you ever do a load check when stepping up to a larger capacity/heavier aircraft.

We had sandbags for the nose locker and instructor rating students to fill seats. YMMB in 80's and 90's.

It's been confirmed that the pilot was the only one onboard.
Taken to hospital with serious injuries.

I think it PA-28, VH-CWW from what I can work out from the grainy images, but I could be wrong.

Newspaper online headline “Pilot saved from fiery crash”.
Accompanying photo suggested a significant lack of burnt aircraft amongst the wreckage.

My recollection of the '6 is that the fuel control system was different or more complex than some other machines?
Definitely not casting aspersions or making any suggestions as I know nothing about this prang, but if it should turn out to be a fuel delivery issue I wouldn't be entirely surprised. The ergonomics of some craft, and the lack of standardisation between them all unnecessarily contribute to many incidents and accidents, IMV.

Cherokee 6 (PA32-300) has the 5 position selector, one for each tank and off. The Lance (PA32R-300) has two interconnected tanks on each side with a 3 position selector, left/right/off.
Whilst having a selector for each tank might complicate it slightly, the selector is in pretty good position under the throttle, so is not hidden from view or fiddly. I could see issues if a Lance pilot went back and flew one with minimal time on the books, there could be some assumptions made wrt fuel that might haunt them.
As far as standardisation goes, this is a 1977 machine. You will need some time travel kit to fight that war.

The latest news from a Channel 10 reporter is that the ATSB is going to analyse the flight data recorder to determine what went wrong. :ugh:

Saw that DF, seems the wing jettison system worked quite well though.
The local mayor would like the airport closed as he doesn't wish to see any repeats, perhaps given the car crashes, injuries and deaths on his roads he might consider closing them as well while he's at it.

On initial reading I thought the local mayor, Cr Steve Staikos, was doing the typical reaction of advocating the airport be closed, but then as I read further in disbelief he is actually advocating the cessation of "big box" development around Moorabbin airport because it is eroding the safety margins of the facility.
Unfortunately a number of "big boxes" have already been built rather close to the airport action.

Never let truth get in the way of a good story.
The papers and the TV media made much about the accident. However I noted in the same H-S paper that a TV star got hit by car and put in hospital. That dgot scant few lines on Page 19 of the Herald-Sun.
For those that say close the airport maybe they should look at the facts. Each week there are serious car abd truck accidents within a short distance from the airport. Death and serious injuries. They are lucky to get a note in the Police file.
Then there are the weekly car accidents that have a car coming off the roadway and end up in the lounge room or bedroom of. some home. This used to be rare but is now weekly.
For those that complain about the airport and rare aircraft accidents and want to close the airport perhaps they should consider banning car driving and turn roadways in farm land.
That would stop car accidents as well.

If its just a few cuts and bruises, that’s great and relieving news.
It’s disappointing that a ‘fiery plane crash’ (not) makes the news because its exciting, yet the positive outcome doesn’t get relayed (because that’s boring news).
In social media, I read the report of a stupid woman claiming it to be the fault of 5G, because the radar on the plane wasn’t updated to work with 5G.
A major news network said that the Flight Data Recorder (of a Piper Cherokee) would be analysed..

Strictly third hand rumour, but I was speaking to a friend of a friend today, a non-flyer who it turns out knows the pilot quite well and has spoken to him since the crash.
He described the problem as fuel selection error.
SSD... Can you ask God to step ON those that make such idiotic comments.
Such ignorant statements are verbal “Darwin Awards” and need to be dealt with...pronto.
