Caravan rating in Kenya

Hello to fellow sky and forum dwellers,

I`am interested in doing a Caravan rating,and i found that one of the schools in Kenya is advertising rating for 1000usd (this is reduced price for their students,don`t know full price), and promising some time building with their sister company Aeronav.

I would welcome any insights and experience with them, or other flight school in Kenya doing the rating. I`ll probably have to do rating on validation, it`s to much hustle to convert to full Kenyan licence,and that rises next question, can i transfer c208 rating to my EASA licence?

I am close to 1000TT EASA fATPL-IR-ME, and would appreciate any advice on that subject as well.

Also it`s nice to jump start this African thread, its` become sad in past couple of months,

better to do it in TZ , flying is happening in Afrika not like EU , people makin munney

TZ looks great for flying, but i didn't found any flight school doing the rating, i'll do more research.

I found only Simuflight in SA doing the rating, and you are right, flying in EU is non existent and it will stay like that for some time.

Do you have any idea of how much would cost me to do rating in TZ, approximate figure, any recommendations?

I did mine at Simuflight. They were really good. It was $3000ish. 1000 USD is quite cheap - and with promises of time.
Regarding rating on EASA license, 2 possibilities.

1. You'll have to check if EASA approves the territory and/or school to endorse your European licence.
2. If they won't allow it, you'll have to get the rating on Kenyan licence and then go back to EASA to add the rating to your Euro licence, based on your endorsed Kenyan licence.
You'll still be able to train for rating on validation, but flying / conversion would require the endorsed Kenyan licence.

Thanks for info about Simuflight, price seams reasonable, and 1000$ advertised is for their in house students from zero to CPL-IR , don't know how much is going to cost someone from outside.

Also some time building is tempting and i just wanted to find some info,and if i'ts true or not,and what to expect from it.

For rating, second option seams more likely, to get validation and then to transfer rating to my licence.

$3000 is the average price. There are very few schools that offer the rating. I did mine at a charter company based at Wilson. Took me about two weeks to complete. It was fun because I got the training on their charter flights around the country. I learnt a lot too because I had to land on unpaved runways, learn low approaches to scare wild animals etc Plus I enjoyed learning from the pilots which is a different experience compared to flight instructors. Training at schools is rather limited because flights restricted to around Nairobi. Make sure your IR is valid. How many hours of training is the school offering? I had 8 hours at the end of my training.

Caravan rating in Kenya is tricky, considering the number of companies using that fleet. However, there are a few greedy individuals at Wilson airport who will give you the rating if you are able to part with between $2000-$3000 for 6-7 Hours on the right seat.

If you are still looking into this, I have it on good authority that the charter company associated with the flight school you're interested in was involved in an accident with one of its caravans in early 2021 (Complete hull loss). Furthermore, their second caravan has been down for maintenance in Orly airpark for about a year (an entire year!) citing unavailability of parts due to a reduced supply chain. They are now using a PA34 to run the majority of their charter flights. Having dealt with some of the individuals at said company, I personally would stay well away from them.

Get quality by going to the sim and then fly hands-on. It might be slightly higher that the promised but you'll have a better safety culture while in ops. Price is usually around $3,000-3500.

Can even get ATR job but all students must pay for rating at Precession TZ , don’t like students who ask too many questions
