Did you know that there is one, and only one, living recipient of the Victoria Cross from WW2?
He is Flt Lt John Alexander Cruickshank VC ED. Flt Lt Cruickshank was awarded his VC for actions on the 17th of July 1944 when, at the age of 24, as the captain of a Catalina flying boat on anti-submarine patrol from Sullem Voe, he attacked and sunk a surfaced German U-boat, and then, despite having suffered serious injuries from anti-aircraft fire, successfully piloted the aircraft back to base.
Flt Lt Cruickshank turned 101 years old on the 20 May 2021 - what an incredible man!

I bet he's one of those delusional people who believes he is NOT a hero!:ok:

His return to base is a story in itself.

Hero in my book, it's ironic that conflict can both ennoble and reduce to base and all the shades in between.

Respect Sir

Planesailing's original Catalina represented his aircraft. Delighted to hear this remarkable man is still with us.

He is indeed very unassuming but a real hero. Its a real pity he does not want one of our new P8s named after him.
