Hi,

Can someone recommend a training organization (ideally in Europe) that could help me in renewing my expired Citation XLS type rating? As per EASA regulations there is no limit to when it expired (in my case it was around 5 years ago) and the only thing I need is completing training based upon an individual training programme. This can significantly lower the costs.
I would also like to get in touch with someone who had a similar situation and managed to renew the rating - how many hours of ground school / SIM training and checking had it taken?

CAE have a matrix for this and it should not be too much more than a standard renewal. They are not the cheapest though and will always quote you high initially. Haggle on the cost.

another option would be to contact an operator with several XLS and ask if you can do it with them. If you identify an operator, I’m sure people here could help with an introduction to the relevant training manager for you to enquire.

Assuming that you have flown less than 200 hours within the last 12 months, CAE wants:

2 days of ground school, a written test, 4 simulator sessions, and a LPC—if your rating expired 5 years ago
2 days of ground school, a written test, 6 simulator sessions, and a LPC—if your rating expired 6+ years ago

I am looking at "AMC1 FCL.740(b) Validity and renewal of class and type ratings":
"(a) The objective of the refresher training is for the applicant to reach the level of proficiency necessary to safely operate the relevant type or class of aircraft. The amount of refresher training needed should be determined on a case-by-case basis by the ATO"
"(b) After having determined the needs of the applicant, the ATO should develop an individual training programme based on the initial training for the rating, focusing on the aspects where the applicant has shown the greatest needs"

There is no minimum training requirement, just a case-by-case determination of my training needs by the ATO. I understand that they could give me a test to check my type-related knowledge and a SIM check to assess what training is required to reach proficiency, and then prepare an individual training programme.

Has anybody had a similar situation with an expired TR - an ATO giving them a short refresher training and LPC?

Surely lots of colleagues will have had a similar situation, as yours. Personally I've twice had this happen. Once on a Fokker 50 (9 years expired) and and once on a Gulfstream G550 (3+ years expired). Both times my license issuing authority (EASA country) accepted the ATO's proposal for the renewal training. I can't really remember what it was on the F50 but something in the line of 3 sims and then an LPC (which in my case was a skills test for ATPL as well (back in 2009). For the G550 (G-V) it was a normal EASA recurrent training program (no more, no less) at FSI FAB, which is 2 days ground school, 2 days sim training and 1 LPC sim session (in total 3 sim sessions).

Do you know if written test is open book test as per a standart recurrent or it is as for Initial? Easa rating expired less than 3 years.

I’d go with these guys too, should be substantially cheaper but check cae and fsi as well
