ABAC Pilots Notes

The Association of British Aero Clubs - ABAC - in the 1960's published a set of Pilot's Notes for various aircraft, the one's I am aware are Tiger Moth, Auster Autocrat, Piper Colt & Piper Tri-Pacer.

Does anyone know of any others or indeed a full list of all the types covered

I dug into my dusty bag and unearthed a set of Pilot's Notes for Cessna 150 issued by the British Light Aviation Centre sometime in the 1960's, I guess, (as well as Airtours' Notes for C172 and Cambridge Aero Club's for C150F). Was BLAC the same organisation as ABAC, under another name?

There was also a little circular plastic gadget sold by Airtours for setting up a pilot interpreted (rather than controller interpreted) instrument approach using a series of QDMs (every 2 minutes or less), which was part of the IMC Rating syllabus. I forget its Q Code; QGH was the controller interpreted version IIRC. That triggered a flood of memories of painful hours under the hood mastering this (for me) devilishly difficult procedure!

old,not bold - you are correct about the QGH, which was a military procedure. The civil approach, pilot interpreted, was a VDF approach. You could request a QDM as often as you liked, which you probably did while trying to adjust your outbound track!

....which you probably did while trying to adjust your outbound track!Yes, well, if you get that far........I struggled to achieve a constant QDM inbound, with the mental gymnastics needed to work out the drift by juggling heading, QDM, next QDM, new heading, next QDM, next QDM, new heading, next QDM.....oh s**t, I'm outbound, turn to OB radial reciprocal, stopwatch, apply drift, next QDM, call TWR, start descent, next QDM, calculate reciprocal, hells teeth, 8 degrees off, but which way?, new heading, next QDM, check stopwatch, BUMPPH, QFE, stopwatch, next QDM, start descending rate 1 turn to IB heading, next QDM, next QDM, apply drift , check QDM correct inbound heading, continue descent, check minimum safety height, reduce speed, flap, 3 greens, check QDM.....reach for sickbag in seatback, give to girlfriend/future wife in RH seat.......runway in sight.....

I'd hoped to have forgotten all that.....it was bad enough in a C150 on a windy day, horrible in an Aztec at nearly twice the speed.

Can OP tell if there is a difference between LBAC and ABAC?

Yes. Changed it's name at the end of the 60s.

The Association of British Aero Clubs became British Light Aircraft "Corporation" ......I think that's right.

It was "Centre"... see the pic below.

I was corresponding with them as BLAC in 1967 but I don't know the exact date. I'm even fairly certain that when I visited them in Artillery Mansions in 1966 they were BLAC, but that could just be failing memory syndrome.

Edit......Companies House records show British Light Aviation Centre Ltd was incorporated on 18th March 1966, and still exists today..
