It starts by knowing its position (Not GPS weapon. Could be value = zero, zero & zero), and of course it knows where it needs to go.
It knows its velocity, in say North, East & Down movements, therefore can calculate where is was, then where its been, and can use that to know where it needs to go...

The problem comes when your gyros drift....there are backups such as terrain matching

A technique I often used pre-Covid when heading back from my local and falling into a hedge, gutter or similar due to gyro drift or even topple.

Parked cars were always more of an issue as they never seemed to appear on my mental map to enable me to re-establish Track!

Developed a special "search and re-acquire track" mode for such difficult cases! :ok:

Yes, handrailing can still be useful, and cloverleaf search for acquiring that final lock on the front door essential...haha
