There are two US Navy 737 type jets (I don’t know what their military designation) at PRESTWICK and have been for a few weeks, occasionally doing circuits. Anyone any idea why they’re there?

No,most likely crew overseas training. Used to take place from Kinloss when the RAF had it.

Just normal C-40 clipper / P-8 passing through ...it’s the love of haggis and proper whiskey draws them to stopover lol

There have been up to five US Navy P-8s at Prestwick, and another five from a different USN squadron at Lossiemouth (as well as our four P-8s) daily for the last few weeks. At least one appears to be airborne at any one time, and operations are out over the North Atlantic. Presume the Ruskies are being particularly active at the moment?

I am sure I read on a rumour site somewhere that the USN had a 'permanent ' detachment of at least 3 P8's based at Prestwick.

Like everyone else I have no idea of the planned movements of Her Majesty's submarines, but if I was an Admiral I would like to make especially sure that when the larger ones left port no nasty Russian subs were following them. Once upon a time we actually had some helicopters and Nimrods nearby to help out.
Perhaps inviting a friendly NATO country to visit for some SCT might be all we can manage for now.
How would the presence of P-8s at Prestwick stop a Russian submarine following a Trident boat? I can understand how they (P-8s) might let you know a Russian was out and about...

Don't need P-8s to spot some of the other stuff around. I continue to be amazed that LPG-powered tankers such as "Lomonosov Prospect" can turn up in the Clyde Estuary apparently en route to Finnart near Faslane, and then hang about near Prestwick for several days, saw one recently. https://www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/LOMONOSOV-PROSPECT-IMO-9826732-MMSI-636018688 shows her today going back to Murmansk after apparently arriving from Ningbo in China. I wouldn't have thought China or Russia would need oil imports from the UK, or that the UK North Sea industry needs much top-up from either country.

If the Russian is focussing on avoiding being detected by the P8 or trying to evade having been detected then his ability to acquire or track the Trident boat will be seriously compromised.
That’s quite a big ‘if’ isn’t it? Be found in return for tracking the CASD....bargain.

What orca said. Say Captain Tupolev lurks off the Mull of Kintyre, picks up a British or American boat outbound and is detected by a P8 doing so. What happens then? Does the P8 drop on him?

They would act in accordance with the instructions in the operation order and employ the appropriate tactics. You don’t really expect a more detailed answer, at least not from anyone who might know?
