It’s a shame Sentinel is to be broken up for scrap (although there may be ongoing compliance/corrosion issues I’m unaware of). Remove the classified bits and you have an aircraft with a pod and strongpoint underneath, and a separate power system that would be highly suitable for trials of a variety of payloads.
Sad fact is that, given the cost of GLEX parts, they are probably more valuable in $ as spares than as a flying airframe.

Recently our highways department "Signalised" a local road junction instead of installing traffic lights and we now have to go storing as all the things we wish to buy now have been moved out of shops and into stores. Not my part of the ship so a genuine question, but whilst the E3s are probably being put out of their misery if what I hear is correct, it seems a waste of airframes to break the Sentinels up.
Can’t they be repurposed? Some other ISR platform, C2 / communication, VIP transport (rather than taking an Atlas or a C-17 off line just to move a minister round because he wants his own ac) Or would it just be beyond economic viability?

Melchett, DCThumb answered this on the New Aeromed Role for BAe 146 CC and Sentinel R1 to be scrapped next year due to ‘obsolescence’ say MoD threads.

The costs to rework Sentinel would be greater than buying a secondhand Global Express and doing the same work, so no!

IIRC neither have a complete 707 airframe but (as much as I’d like to see it) I can’t see either wanting to waste budgets if they didn’t want to spend more to preserve an example of the worlds first successful commercial airliner.

As for a Global, 2 a penny and nothing noteworthy to look at from the outside.

Sadly that’s the way of things, I remember before all this crud happening an airline breaking 737’s just over 5 years old and out of warranty as they were worth more as spares than complete aircraft.

I am admittedly a bit thick, but it puzzles me that we could determine a requirement for the Sentinel so vital that we needed to spend upwards of £1Billion pounds to obtain it, then having got that capability we scrap it. Do we now have something else that can do the job?

I think that depends on what you mean by "do the job".....

If you mean do the job in a way that will make the powers that be feel ok about themselves, we've got that covered....

If you mean the other kind of do the job, things may be more sticky!

ASRAAM, the CASTOR/ASTOR project had a very long gestation. It started off as a Cold War BAOR requirement (CASTOR), and was then heavily influenced by the apparent success of JSTARS in GW1 and political directives. The competition was quite broad (including an offer of refurbished U2s), and, I imagine, there was plenty of Army/RAF ‘debate’ over requirements, manning and what platform to select. To me, it looks like the RAF has willingly traded a ‘joint’ asset to secure Protector, RJ, P8 and E7 funding in the medium term - and will doubtless claim that each platform can do part of the Sentinel’s role.
