They were getting tired but it’s still a sad day for us die-hard travel fans. The wife will never let me forget that she flew First on one while I never got past Club. So it’s Lufthansa for a 747-8 now as the last game in town.

Early 1970. Playing tennis in Hounslow with the occasional glance up at the LHR arrivals. But what's that . . . a strange, largish type approaching . . . stopped playing tennis to watch a BOAC B747 (the first?) floating past - a definite 'wow' moment.

Fifty years later - last Wednesday Mrs D and I arranged to meet our daughter at Kew Gardens for Xmas present exchange and takeaway al fresco lunch. Steady stream of arrivals into LHR but over a period of three hours or so . . . no B747s.

End of an era. Ho hum.

As it happens though, there were two Boeing 747-400 freighters into Heathrow today [25th December] so although the passenger flights might have gone, the old girl will be around for a few more years yet. Good as a freighter and those with the 747-8 passenger version will probably stick with them a few years longer. Sad to see them disappear out of the skies though, having working on all models apart from the -8 as a ground engineer [747-100/200/300/400 and 747SP]
