Hi, I'm currently a student studying Accounting and Finance at a good university in Dublin and I'm hoping to pursue flight training in the AFTA Ryanair cadet course after I graduate uni. I would like to stay in Dublin after my flight training (although I am aware nothing is ever certain) so EI and FR are looking like the 2 airlines that seem to be good options. My question is: what are the chances that a FR Cadet gets based in EIDW and what kind of influence do cadets have when deciding where they want to be based? I know Dublin is one of the biggest bases for the FR network so I'm thinking it would be relatively easy. I would love to hear the thoughts of past and present RYR pilots. I couldn't find a lot of up to date info on this.

P.S I won't be starting flight school for at least 18 months

You will go anywhere, where they will need you the most, from my info from pre-covid times you can expect the training anywhere around the network but first base is most probably in Buzz network. AFAIK they ask you for preferential cadet line training base, but in the end me and all my friends got something totally different

If you don't want to live anywhere else then, this career is not for you. You should think about pursuing a different career and not waste money with flight training

If you get a job with an airline which has one and just one permanent base, then it's obvious where you will be based. The thing is, these jobs are few and far between and are fought for fiercely by experienced, settled pilots who want to spend more time with their families at home and spare themselves the general inconvenience of commuting. However, only a fraction of all pilots are ever this fortunate. The majority have to either relocate multiple times in their careers or commute on some sort of X days/week on, Y days/weeks off scheme. You are where the aircraft are - and the aircraft are where the company needs them to be in order to generate revenues.

If that's of any comfort to you, RYR is very good for its firmly fixed 5/4 roster pattern - and DUB has connections to lots of places on the network. So, you'll have the chance to go home every week while waiting for a vacancy in DUB.

First base is usually a line training base 2-3 months approximately, then expect to be sent somewhere random, however you can have Dublin as your No1 choice, and as it's the second largest base at the moment you probably won't take too long to get back there.

God knows what the aviation industry will be like by the time you finish however as it'll be a few years before you are licensed hopefully should be in better shape.

AFTA is a good school to go to, great group of people down there.

Best of luck
