Yvonne Chaka Chaka 'linked' to R7m plane deal ....

Leo Gama

Johannesburg - The Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, is at the centre of a row that has been sparked by a controversial deal for the purchase of a Fokker 28 plane for R7.3 million in Swaziland.

The transaction has become the subject of an official Swazi parliamentary investigation. Allegations of bribery relating to the deal are being investigated.

However the parliamentary investigation is itself under fire following revelations that the controversial MP, Marwick Khumalo, who is heading the investigation, is Chaka Chaka's former boyfriend.

The Swazi government has taken steps to establish whether the value of the aircraft equals the purchase price and whether there was a genuine reason for its sale.

Chaka Chaka is mentioned in a recorded interview that the editor of the Times of Swaziland, Vusi Ginindza, had with Chaka Chaka's alleged partner in the deal, Bheki Simelane.

Simelane says he and Chaka Chaka were partners who facilitated the purchase of the plane, for which they received shares. City Press has documents in its posession that are a transcript of the tape.

The matter is now under investigation by both the Swaziland parliament and the cabinet. The cabinet earlier this year called for a forensic audit. The report has not yet been made public.

Minister allegedly bypassed official government agency

Also at the centre of the controversy is the Swazi minister of public works and transport, Titus Mlangeni. He apparently bypassed the official government agency - Jet Corporation - which won a tender to sell the two Swazi national aircraft.

It is alleged Mlangeni colluded with dubious buyers who wanted both aircrafts for an amount less than the real value.

One such buyer was a Dubai-based aircraft spare parts dealer Phillip Ol iver, who attempted to buy both the Fokker 28 and Fokker 100 for R50m, while a legitimate offer of R55m had been made by AAH Holdings - a company based in the Netherlands - for the Fokker 100.

According to media reports in Swaziland, the Fokker 28 was sold to a South African based company, Orcom III Trading (Pty) Ltd, which is an aircraft operator in Southern Africa. The aircraft was taken from Swaziland last Friday.

The company in which Chaka Chaka is mentioned as being a partner is Biz'Africa (Swaziland). Biz'Africa apparently facilitated the purchase of the Fokker 28, which has a 58-seat capacity.

For her involvement, it is alleged in the tape that Chaka Chaka and her business partner and lawyer Simelane received a commission in respect of the deal.

Chaka Chaka did 'quite a lot of work' on deal

It has since emerged that Simelane is the former Mbabane and Johannesburg based lawyer who was struck-off the roll following allegations of mismanagement of clients' funds. He was suspended by the Swaziland Law Society in June.

In the tape Simelane said Chaka Chaka did "quite a lot of work" to facilitate the deal. The Swaziland High Court apparently holds the tape as evidence.

The speaker of parliament in Swaziland, Nicholas Matsebula said members of parliament felt they could not sit passively while people robbed the Swazi nation of their heritage.

Chaka Chaka denied having been involved in the deal. When further questions were put to her, Chaka Chaka threatened to sue anyone who linked her with the deal.

"I know Bheki. He is a lawyer, but I am not involved in any business deals with him," she said.

Ginindza said Chaka Chaka was contradicting herself as she introduced Simelane to a pilot and businessman, Ros Ndisi, and one "Yunus" at an alleged meeting in Sandton.

Chaka Chaka threatened to inform her husband and her lawyers about the matter as "these allegations are not true".

She asked City Press not to bother her further as she was busy with a television interview. She failed to return messages left on her cellphone and did not respond to questions faxed to her.

Yawnnnn ... yawnnnn what is new ... looks like 11 Sept did some good in aircraft sales, in SOME countries ?
