I see old Yeager has passed, aiming higher than ever now!
RIP Chuck, you would have spawned untold amounts of dreams of flight for many a small boy.

Yes, indeed. Very ballsy folk in those early years of high speed research. He had the Right Stuff alright!
The Orange Bell was the first specific and recorded trans sonic flight and Chucky did it, Sore ribs n all
In a Smithsonian article some years ago there was some bright eyed F 86 test pilot did a dive from way up aiming at the famous Ranch and people there claimed to have heard the sonic boom. No definitive proof tho of an unverified 'first'. Only the comments in his log book.
Great book of his and as a P 39 fan he regarded the mid-engined Bell as the best aircraft to aerobat he ever flew..
Did his shock wave knock down the Pearly Gates, I wonder ?
