The Bundestag has approved an order for 31 NH90 Sea Tiger ASW variants to replace its 22 Sea Lynx Mk88As - the Deutsche Marine previous issued a statement of intent without numbers last August. The SeaTigers will have a secondary role supplementing the Sea Lion Transport/SAR version.

This follows closely on the NATO announcement on 19 November of the multinational Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) project which will involve France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and the United Kingdom, and was officially launched with the defence ministers from all five nations signing a letter of intent (LOI) in October. The Five European nations have come together to develop a new medium-lift multirole helicopter for the 2035–40 time period.

So not just the RN getting funds. :)

The selection of the NH90 Sea Tiger (https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2019/08/german-navy-selects-nh90-nfh-as-lynx-asw-helicopter-replacement/) maritime helicopter as the replacement for the Lynx ASW helicopters was announced in August 2019 but without providing much details.

The Sea Tiger will be the German version of the NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NH90 NFH) and closest to the French variant of the NFH (NFRS) known as Caiman. The NH90 NFH variant is already in service with the navies of Italy, Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands, and has been selected by Qatar.

The new helicopters will be equipped for various operational roles. In addition to the multi-role helicopters, the contracts also include accessories, spare parts and training materials for around 2.7 billion euros. Starting 2025, the Sea Tigers will be replacing the 22 Sea Lynx Mk88A helicopters in service since the 1980s.

Any rumors on how the Naval NH-90 is doing operationally? The reports on the Army versions don't seem flattering, most seemingly about not being robust enough for trooping (or high heels!) missions.

The French Navy were having availabilty issues - it had improved from 40% to 50% earlier this year - half the fleet is in maintenanace or upgrade - delvered to 3 different standards, all needing upograde to the current production standard, which is alledgedly stable and much better.

The Norwegian Navy / Coast Guard order has been problematic - it was threatened with cancellation, later they decided likely availability meant that all the Coast Guard ones would have to go to the Navy as well. That decision has since been reversed.

(addition) Some time ago( 2014?) the Netherlands experienced corrosion issues in the maritime environment due to the use of non-salt resiitant materials - this has been corrected at the manufacturer's expense.

There are two versions for the German Navy:
Sea Lion SAR and VERTREP - already in service as Chopper2004 says.
Sea Tiger ASW - which is the newly ordered version.
