I love a sense of humour - but Joint Light Tactical vehicle?

I've always thought the Humvee was a monster with very little room inside. I wonder how many a C-130 can carry, and which helicopters can carry it underslung, and how far....

USAF replacing Humvee with JLTV

The U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s Agile Combat Support Directorate has started the process to replace its existing inventory of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) with the new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV).

The service has a need for 3,230 vehicles and they will be bought via an Army contract with Oshkosh Corporation. Not all HMMWVs will be replaced, the current process is to swap out the up-armored variant.

Air Force units are expected to start receiving the new JLTVs starting from September 2021, after having mission specific equipment installed at Naval Information Warfare Center.

Part of the reason the Humvee was a monster was its wide wheel base that was designed I believe to run in the tracks of tracked vehicles.. as with all things like this armour is great, however it at the end of the day it just means the bad guys just use a bigger IED to destroy them, that radiator seems very exposed.

The US Army requirement is for 50 000 vehicles....It wont replace the Hummer on a one for one basis though. The big difference is that the Hummer failed to cope with the demands of upgraded armour requirements whilst the JLTV has a high baseline protection baked in and a number of scalable kits to upgrade protection and firepower in line with the threat. Yes it’s heavy, but it can be slung by a -53K or -47F and carried internally by C130 and up. I’ve had a go - it’s an awesome piece of kit with the trickest suspension I’ve seen. Oh, also has killer Air Con, USB charging points and ‘mega gulp’ cup holders........

From the look of its lack of ground clearance It's going to be using that winch quite often.
Its also so ugly it makes the Humvee look good - and that takes some going.

Apparently a base requirement was that it would be deployable using a C-130 - but although everyone is very cagey about weights it seems to be around 10,500lbs - which is almost twice the weight of a Humvee

No, but to be fair that's a common claim whenever the width of a HMMWV comes up. It doesn't stand scrutiny. Usually the more common claim is that it was designed to follow in the tracks of the M1 Abrams but that's patent crap even if you just see both vehicles visually... no tape measure needed. The HMMWV is 7 feet wide, and the M1 is 12 feet wide so the track of the Hummer sits very, very comfortably inside the track of the M1. Even the much, much smaller M113 APC is still 9 feet wide, and again the track of the Hummer fits comfortably inside the inner tracks of the APC.

The hummer is that wide simply because it's really big and heavy (having a much bigger brief than the light trucks before it), and it needed to be stable on uneven ground.

Oh and that new thing is stupendously ugly!

The A-6 Intruder was also ugly, but it was effective. So if it's ugly, but it works, learn to love ugly. :hmm:

Is that front bumper just a Movember thing?

Im assuming it’s to lift the front of the vehicle when it hits an earth bank etc , the way it’s sitting wheel wise, has it air or hydraulic suspension and that is it in its lowered position?

Oshkosh is tinkering with a uniquely British JLTV

LONDON – Britain has moved a step closer to completing a deal for purchasing Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV) following the award of a contract allowing platform builder Oshkosh Defense to trial proposed UK sub-systems on the vehicle.

The British Ministry of Defence signed a demonstration phase deal with the US government in June to investigate the integration of UK equipment on the JLTV as part of a proposed foreign military sales agreement......

Cost has been cited by some media reports as one of the reasons the two sides have failed so far to finalize a deal......

British armed forces minister James Heappey told Parliament in January the intention was to decide on the JLTV procurement this year. That, though, was before Covid-19 struck, causing the delay of a defense review until around the end of the year and chronically damaging the financial prospects of military equipment spending.....

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in 2017 the British had been approved to purchase 2,747 JLTV vehicles at a cost of $1 billion. The Parliamentary Defence Committee , also in 2017, said the expectation was that 750 vehicles would likely be procured.....

Won't someone please introduce the US Army to the Toyota Hilux? People on that cheap truck have been busting the ass of the various US supported states for decades, yet we remain oblivious.
This latest 10,000 pound JLTV slug will doubtless fare just as well against the 4,000 pound Hilux as its predecessor did.

The new Oshkosh TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system suspension provides 20-inches of wheel travel, and again a 70% off-road, 30% on-road operating profile. TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system suspension is fitted to Oshkosh's JLTV/L-ATV. TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system suspension is an ‘intelligent’ independent suspension, providing variable ride height through gas springs.[8] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshkosh_TAK-4_Independent_Suspension_System#cite_note-Jane's_Logistics,_Support_and_Unmanned_JLTV-8)

The difference is we care about the lifespan of the people operating it...
Just about anything is viable when it's a suicide mission.

Fact though is that the Hilux people are winning. What are the plans to change that?
Otherwise, this is all a waste.

Plus of course, its NIH - there are no vast development contracts, opportunities to overcharge, possibilities to try out someones mad ideas at the tax payers expense................... can you imagine how maintainable that
"JLTV/L-ATV. TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system" is going to be in the middle of some swamp or the Mali desert? Your going to need a herd of maintenance guys with all sorts of specialist and delicate kit - I know how long it takes to get my Ford fixed in Europe ............................
