CAA flight tests during Lockdown 2.0

Does anybody have any idea what the CAA plans are? We’ll probably find out tomorrow though.

I was going to jump in with a couple of students for their last CPL and IRT profiles before recommending for test this week, but that would be a bit pointless if they don’t fly for 4 weeks.

I suspect, being a “government department”, they will suspend initials as they did in the first round of lockdowns.

Best course of action, email flight test bookings and see what they have to say.

DVSA have suspended driving lessons and tests in England until 2/12, so we know where this is going...

Just received this in an e-mail from the LAA:

We also note recent advice from the Secretary of State for Transport that “flying training and tests are not allowed during the lockdown, the same as driving lessons and tests. Airfields are allowed to stay open and hiring of aircraft is okay so long as it is for one of the reasons you are allowed to leave home”. LAA Pilot Coaching activities will therefore be suspended for the month ahead.

I just got this in an email from the CEO of the BMAA....

From the Secretary of State for Transport.

Flight instruction and/or examining is not allowed in England during the forthcoming Lockdown.

There is no outright prevention of General Aviation flying.

So I shall be very glad of having a share parked on the grass at an airfield with self service pumps for a bit of personal flying, but I somehow doubt I'll be doing any instructing this month.

Searched for this on the DfT website and all the other places I could think of, can't find an official written reference anywhere. Where did the LAA and BMAA get this gem from? Until we see it in writing, it's just gossip and terrible uncertainty.

Anyhow, for the barrack room lawyers; advice is not the same as 'not allowed'.

That is encouraging. Either way I think much of the next few weeks will be spent rewriting procedures.
At the end of today nothing has been heard, but until the MPs vote then I’m not sure what they can say.

I won't be instructing per se, but I will fly the revalidations. Too many Pilots are rusty enough without stopping them flying for the lack of 1 hour with instructor

The BMAA and LAA no doubt received the 'information' from a statement the Boy Wonder Shapps made to the APPG/GA, subsequently posted on a Farsebook site.

However, it is NOT yet government policy. Johnson is going to have a tough time today and when the ACTUAL policy eventually appears on the gov.uk website the CAA will link to it via a SkyWise announcement.

CAA priority is, understandably, for professional pilots - particularly those who haven't been able to travel to fly an LPC in a simulator in another MS.
