I fly single pilot for a private operator who does not care whether I wear a uniform or not, so I don't.
Yet with Covid and self isolation etc, I need to show that I'm a real pilot, otherwise security people tend to be suspicious, so I'm considering the purchase of a uniform.
The boss prefers silver stripe that are more discreet. As it is not common I wonder whether it would be a faux pas against the etiquette to wear silver stripes.

Which etiquette? I would much prefer to wear silver stripes because they are (for me) less pretentious than gold ones. Gold stripes (for me) are rather suitable for cruise-ship captains, together with a hat and a pair of binoculars around the neck :O
There are stripes that one can clip-on and easily remove once clear of the security check.

It tends to be related to where the operator is located.
In Europe, Austrian and German crew usually have silver stripes, elsewhere gold stripes are more common.
I guess it is a cultural thing.
Anyway, when you join a company you do not have the choice !
