Hi all. Does anyone know the current status of GA
flights being allowed over the border and back
without landing in NSW. Was planning to do a Brisbane to Northern NSW scenic with the only landings being Gold Coast and then back to home base in Brisbane. Has anyone done similar recently and run into any issues or know who it would be best to contact to enquire.

From what I’ve seen, as long as you don’t land, no problem. Training aircraft doing it everyday. If you do land depending on where you are maybe, maybe not. Stay in the so called postcode bubbles and your ok. If you land make sure you have the correct form X and stay on tarmac. Expect the Qld Police to meet you when land back at base to check your form X identity ect

You likely could land in NSW if you wanted to, ie for fuel.

select General for a QLD border pass. Follow the questions, when you get to “please select your situation” you would select “You arrived by air to a COVID-19 hotspot for the sole purpose of transiting through an airport and did not leave the confines of the airport” as that is probably the most correct.

get a G pass, don’t have to quarantine on return back in QLD.

You could always lodge one in advance, see what happens. If you end up with a Quarantine version instead, don’t land in NSW!

Thanks for replies! I had heard of at least one case of police meeting someone on landing at Archerfield so obviously they are monitoring or being advised by Airservices, which is not surprising. My just wondering if I needed to get a border pass if I was not actually landing in NSW, which I think I wouldn't. I will see if I can make contact with someone this week to seek confirmation and post if I find out.

If you're not landing then I believe no restrictions apply. At least that's how it is in Vic (flying over NSW and SA borders). The state health restrictions don't apply to the federal airspace above state boundaries.

However, there are overly keen regulators and police out there so best to do your due diligence first.

I fly to Stanthorpe quite regularly from Archerfield and have landed there several times in the last six months. The threshold of Runway 26 is 300 metres from the QLD/NSW border which runs north to south in this part of the world. Your base leg is all in NSW and you enter QLD only on very short finals! The road underneath you on finals is not surprisingly called Border Rd.

Similarly, the last third of the flight is in NSW anyway, from Killarney/Legume south to YSPE.

Don't worry. Just don't land in NSW.

Thanks both sounds reasonable. Thinking about it I think the reason the flight I heard about may have got police attention is on the flight plan they had a landing at Tenterfield. However as a PPL Nav training flight they never do, they do a practice lost procedure and then divert back to Archer. So it could have been the flight plan showing a landing in NSW and then QLD that triggered the attention. Given we are just overflying sounds pretty safe.

When you land at a drome in a different state from departure for the purposes of a flight as long as you don't leave the gazetted boundary of that drome you are deemed not to have arrived in that state.
