Former PLAAF commander and Korean War ace Wang Hai has passed away
News reports from China says former commander of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) and ace during the Korean War, Wang Hai, has passed away today in Beijing. He was 94 years old.
Wang had served with the 3rd Fighter Aviation Division during the Korean War and he shot down or damaged nine American aircraft. He had served as the commander of PLAAF from 1985 to 1992 and was instrumental in bringing the Su-27 into the country to modernize the air force.

Wang Hai was born on January 19, 1926 in Yantai (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yantai), Shandong (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shandong) Province. He joined the Communist Party of China (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Party_of_China) (CPC) in September 1945 when he was a student at Weihai High School, and studied at Linyi People's Revolutionary University in Shandong. In June 1946 he entered Mudanjiang (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudanjiang) Aviator School, the first aviator training school of the CPC. In May 1950, he graduated from the training program to become a fighter pilot.
During the Korean War (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_War) (1950–53), Wang was a pilot of the 3rd Fighter Aviation Division (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_Fighter_Aviation_Division_(People%27s_Republic_of_China) ). He shot down or damaged nine American aircraft, with his own air group scoring 29. The MiG fighter he flew is exhibited in the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Museum_of_the_Chinese_People%27s_Revolution) in Beijing.
After the war, he was promoted to command an air force division, and later Commander of the Guangzhou Military Region (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guangzhou_Military_Region) Air Force. In 1985, he was appointed Commander of the People's Liberation Army Air Force (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Liberation_Army_Air_Force). When the PLA re-instituted military ranks, he was awarded the rank of general (shang jiang (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shang_jiang)) in September 1988. He retired in 1992. Starting with him all PLAAF commanders have been career aviators.......
