Boris was in Scotland yesterday and visited, I presume Lossiemouth, where I presume this shot of him with a late Mk Spitfire as aback drop was taken. Can anyone tell me about the Spitfire please? My first assumption was that it was at East Fortune but it looks like the hangar the Typhoons are in.

It's an F21,LA255 coded JX-U
It arrived in November 2014 and is owned by the 1 Squadron Association

It was delivered to 1(F) Sqn in 1945 and flown over Europe at the end of WW2. Presumably it was on display at Wittering before going into storage. When 1(F) Sqn moved to Lossiemouth in September 2014 it arrived a few months later on low loaders and was reassembled in the refurbished 1(F) Sqn hangar. Its twin is hanging from the roof of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. The Glasgow specimen was originally delivered to 1(F) Sqn before being transferred to 602 City of Glasgow Sqn.

I can't help you with the Spit' but I do know that if they ask for independence again, WE WANT IT BACK.

I suspect the thinking is that Scotland is 1/4 of UK? Completely ridiculous in this case, how many Spitfires were built there? Not a lot.

Try telling Sturgeon that. Let us know if you get a bloody word in edgeways.

I expect they'll give England the nuclear subs, so we could swap them for the Spitfire.

I must say, I think it says nothing good about the Prime Minister that he chooses a WW2 plane for his background rather than something current.

Some Blackburn Rovers fans flew them too, but they don't have one in the stadium.

Is it owned by the Association? When did they acquire it?

Is the Lossie one flyable?
Nope. It was in BBMF’s hangar for a while, and was a bit of a basket case. The boys worked their magic and rolled it in glitter and it then went back to 1(F) at Leuchars.

Here's the one in Glasgow

A very carefully curated and themed museum there:

"So where do you want this Spitfire?"

"Oh just hang it above the giraffe"

"The giraffe standing by the massive starfish?"

"Yep, that's the one"

Genius.

It was moved to Cottesmore when they moved there, then up to Lossiemouth.

Did she fling you a deafy then? How sad....

PS Youse can have the Art Galleries Spitfire back when the last vestige of your Yank-controlled nuclear phallic symbol leaves the Clyde.

But not the Griffon, cos it's not in it.

Okay. I'll trade you Independence for one used Spitfire. Deal?

Consolidated Pneumatics of Fraserburgh (now defunct, but were known locally as 'The Toolies') were a major manufacturer of RR Merlins. An old lady in Aberdeen once told me she worked there building them. She was really annoyed when they put her on night shift as she missed all the dances. Imagine asking your Granny what she did during the war and she says she built Rolls Royce Merlin engines. Straight away you'd know you'd never be as cool as her.

Yep, you can have the subs, and the warheads. Thousands of jobs for Devonport or Portsmouth, or both.

That's only a still. There's a Typhoon behind him that appeared before they panned round to the Spitfire.

A more accurate thread title would be "Boris's visits Stromness and Lossiemouth on a tax payer funded campaigning stint".
