Air Pig Video

Modern Aircraft have EGPWS that gives out a warning of ‘Don’t sink’ on approaches. I just wondered, when taking off in that steam driven ergonomic slum, did the Nav in the back have a similar role by prodding the Pilot with a pointy stick and shouting ‘Don’t sink!’? See Video at 0:40 secs.

When a friendly ship was spotted the Nav called "Don't Sink". When the bad guys were spotted he called "Sink"....

And how many times have they got it wrong despite all the new technology.

That large Perspex shield in front of the nav always caught my attention in the Bucc. Blast shield in the event of ejection or something else ?

Correct - that is exactly what it was.

Good source on Buccaneers here - including early development and "good ideas" that weren't proceeded with:

The Blackburn Buccaneer (http://www.airvectors.net/avbucc.html)

If it"s Nasty looking it's American, If it's Weird looking it's French, If it's just plane Ugly it's British....

In line with my previous experiences of watch US Army chinook approaches, that video was like watching paint dry.

Speaks to the connection between the grunts and the A10 pilots

You're not banging out just yet, may I bring your attention to the Vulcan vs the BUFF, Buff sure was nasty but was the Vulcan ugly? VC10 in RAF transport command, I'd say stunning.

Slight drift, as it's the bastard lovechild of a Anglo-French relationship but Concorde is ugly?

I do accept that we've produced some aesthetically challenging aircraft but we've also created some absolute beauties.

None more so than the single seat Hunters

Agreed, although our preferences on colour scheme may differ, I think Miss Demanour works well.

While we're on the subject, Hawk is a pretty but no-nonsense aircraft and IMO looks best in Navy colours, reminiscent of an A-4 from certain angles.

There are many shortcomings and failures which can be laid at the door of the British aviation industry (RIP), but making ugly aircraft is not one of them, with very few exceptions.

Some of which are:
Short Seamew
Short Skyvan
Bristol Freighter
Blackburn Beverley
Blackburn Buccaneer
BAC TSR2
Hunting/BAC Jet Provost

Personal view only, no doubt many will disagree.

Proving, once again, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I would venture that in my opinion, the TSR2 was beautiful. I have a soft spot for the buccaneer, and would have thought the jet provost was entirely inoffensive, if not in the final analysis beautiful.

Agreed - there's not much wrong with the last three on that list.

Falcon900, agree with you on the Buccaneer, it's not the looks of the thing - down low, and then lower it just looked right.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder indeed . English Electric Lightning features in the top five of my list , as does the Handley Page Victor . Nowhere to be seen on any list of mine ? F 35....

My fave, the Shorts Seamew. A Test Pilot's opening remark in his report was "Entry to the cockpit is difficult; it should be made impossible.".
