Iv’e checked my old logbook and my course started on 25 May 66, with the first flight on 14 Jun. The flying badge was awarded on31 Mar 67. I seem to recall the course number was 178 with No 1 Sun.

Did my flying training at Cranwell, but near the end of the course, my solo landaway was to Acklington in Nov 1966. The idea was to fly there in the morning, have lunch and return to Cranwell in the afternoon. However by the time I landed it was starting to snow, and the airfield went black before I (and another student doing the same thing) were able to take off again. We were stuck there for 4 days, as even when the runways were cleared, the weather remained outside solo limits for navigation sorties. Eventually 4 QFIs flew up to fly us home as a fourship. Some of the students at Acklington really looked after us well, providing us with some civilian clothes (we'd obviously not brought anything with us) washing kit etc, bought us drinks in the Mess as we had no money, and even took us out to experience the Newcastle night life one evening. Maybe you were one of them, Sandybee!
