The US Secretary of Defense (sic) tweeted this picture yesterday to mark independence day...

What an excellent way for them to recognise the contribution of the British to their national holiday.

True. If not for the Brits, what would the Yorktown victory have meant? Cheers!

Very nice, I'm sure - but not quite the same as the tribute to the erstwhile colonial power in the original picture.

It’s quite neat that the Statue of Liberty also recognises the French contribution, which was supporting the separatists (with cash and kit, especially gunpowder from the French West Indies) because they feared how economically powerful the colonies might make the UK. That didn’t work out so well for France :E The debt it got itself into by funding the separatists, and the inspiration their success gave to those fed up with the monarchy, did a great deal to trigger the French Revolution not so long afterwards. This led to much time wasted separating heads from shoulders domestically, while the Brits continued to amass wealth unfettered until rich enough to do things like send big fleets of warships and hire Prussian armies to defeat the French :ok:

I was on exchange with the USAF at Langley AFB in 89/91 and took my boat to Yorktown/Williamsburg one 4 July flying the White Ensign - which I was not entitled to fly - but it got some good banter with the locals.

Great place, great people, great fun.

What is the age of the "youngest" of the aircraft designs?

George III:

'We didn't wish harm on the Americans
Just to punish them with a few bloody noses
Then to make laws for the happiness of both communities
But lack of discipline got into the army
Lack of skill and energy in the navy
And lack of unity at home
We lost America.'

No mention of the RAF :)

If you use first flight of type as a metric, 25 years old, or there abouts, for the F/A-18E/F...
