ATC RTF Transmission Quality Myanmar

Greetings all. Does anybody have any comments about the quality of VHF transmissions in the Myanmar UIR/FIR? Do you often receive only part of the message from ATC? Do you have to repeat yourself to be understood? Any observations welcome. Many thanks.

I seem to remember Yangon Control as sounding as if they had their “permanent echo device” tuned up to maximum.

”Yangon, Yangon, Speedbird 34?”

”SPEED-speed BIRD-bird THREE-three FOUR-four YAN-yan GON-gon, G-go AH-head-head?”

Been since 2016 I haven't flown there but I recall one of the worst RTF of SE Asia. Bad quality equipment might be the issue

Very poor to the north and the relay cause an echo which at least gives you a second chance to hear the controller. Remember this a country which only got its automated teller machines connected to the outside world in 2012 and prior to that year mobile phone usage was negligible.

I remember about 10 years ago.. trying to call them as we entered the airspace. We needed to deviate due TS.. about 70 nm south of track. As much as we tried all we got was static. I decided it was safer to rely on TCAS not to run into another aircraft .. than of course fly through CBs. We never managed to talk to them the whole time we were off track and in their FIR.. and we tried hard on all available methods

Yangon tower's OK these days, maybe got themselves an upgrade

As previously mentioned, the area frequencies quite often have a strong echo, and there's a coverage gap in the far south of the country

Rumour has it that controllers in this region and The Western Sahara work from a telephone connected remote location and the echo is due to an artifact of the radio transmitter being connected to this phone line which uses a very old infrastructure.

It wasn't that long ago that you had to broadcast to other aircraft on a common traffic frequency, similar to 126.9 in most of Africa.
