KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd may lay off more that 300 employees to pare down its operations amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, reported Astro Awani.

The lay offs, said to have been announced by chief executive officer Riad Asmat during an internal briefing session yesterday, are expected to involve 111 cabin crew members, 172 pilots and 50 engineers.

"Everyone involved in the job cuts will be notified by email within 24 hours. AirAsia also promises compensation to all involved," the report said.

Riad was quoted as saying that as there are no other options to ensure that the low-cost carrier continues to operate like before, the organisation's restructuring is a viable alternative at present due to the difficult global economic situation.

The report also stated that long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X will also reduce its workforce, including foreign employees.

No specific number of employees was announced, but the proposed job cuts will affect various sectors of the workforce, including management, operations, crew and pilots. - Bernama

Absolutely appaling the way AirAsia Malaysia went about their retrenchment exercise in AK and D7 - some guys 15 years and more in the company were shown the door, all they got were 3 months to compensate the notice in lieu. AirAsia obviously did not follow the ministry of labour best practices with regards to foreigners and LIFO, last time i checked the flag on the side of the aircraft is the jalur gemilang and to kick the locals out and still have loads of other nationalities there is nothing short of scandalous, this would not happen in Singapore or Indonesia and i really hope the MOT, MOHR and CAAM does an investigation.
Tony understand this - LOCALS are not expat in their own country, they were instrumental in building AirAsia to one of the largest LCC in the world and to treat them in this manner is disgusting 😡

You are alluding to the Airbus scandal which apparently he was cleared of all wrongdoing - mind you this was a company appointed panel - do you think anything that goes on at AirAsia he does not know about, almost everything goes through him - something as serious as the retrenchment exercise would definitely have been approved by him, nearly 200 pilots were retrenched at AK & D7 , I`m sure the list went across his table especially the names of the guys who have been with AirAsia a long time.
