I always wondered why Dragon was morphed into that weird "Cathay Dragon" brand and not integrated right away. That explains it I guess.

what should have been done 14 years ago? The reason it wasn’t done 14 years ago, is exactly the same as the reason it is not being done now.
The only reason cathay got involved with dragon in the first place was for the Chinese routes. Nothing has changed, dragon own those routes, should the aoc be closed, the routes go up for bid, they don’t automatically transfer to an airline of your choice. All this does is make it very difficult to loose the dragon aoc, without possibly loosing rights to fly to a lot of Chinese destinations. Remember, hka is quiet, not dead, and they have major mainland support, putting those routes up for bid on cx’s behalf would be very risky, besides the fact that even if it had to be done, and miraculously no airline bid on them, cx would still not be allowed to take them because that would be considered expansion.
