Anyone managed to get a clearance for a GA landing/touch and go at YMML, they seem to be approving them at YSSY.

Woops!

More importantly, does anyone know what the landing fee would be?

$370’ish.

No current dispensation on landing fees is on offer at YMML.

What or where is MML and SSY?

Melbourne is YMML (ICAO) or MEL (IATA)
Sydney is YSSY (ICAO) or SYD (IATA)

... yes and they are all paying full price for the privilege. A Cirrus landed 2 weeks ago, backtracked down the taxiway and took off again. Expensive trip!

Quite clearly you knew that the posters were referring to Melbourne and Sydney. Why make a deal out of it? So we have ICAO grammar police here now?

Worse still, the anti-grammar police. :}

Troll alert for that guy!

I used to fly in to MML in the 80's for the thrill of it, park at the end of the finger way where Kendall's where operating, get picked up by a safety officer and dropped off at the terminal observation deck(remember that deck?) had a coffee, then returned to the plane and dissapear all the way back to EN, all for FREE! -)

There is scope for confusion. A lot of my charter pilots/instructors seemed to be going to an aerodrome abrreviated to "SBK". What the hell they were doing at Springbrook, a VFR reporting point for Coolangatta/GoldCoast, was beyond me.
Their Logbooks also showed they had gone to this mysterious mecca, often (confusingly) via Brooklyn Bridge or 2FC. Oh sorry.... 2RN.

Like a lot of things in Aviation, it doesn't matter.... until one day it does.

Surely you jest. The gen Y’s and Z’s would be unlikely to believe your fanciful stories :-)

Many moons ago my Mother worked at Essendon airport at Ansett. One sunny afternoon her RAAF pilot brother flew in, in a brand new RAAF C130 and took a bunch of the office staff for a fly around the CBD and back to MEN. Those were the days...

Write **** down like MML and SSY in your log book or 'frozen' ATPL in your CV and keep eroding your chances of getting that next job. Just saying.

Not much else to talk about other than the boring topic of the Virgins collapse.

This forum has "Professional Pilots" in it's name and one would expect that the basics of location indicators etc would be taught at some stage during the learning curve. Sadly like many other 'little' things that does not appear to be the case these days. As for ASSY, that was correct once upon a time, we are just showing our age!! The second letter back then referred to the FIR as in AMML and APPH etc. Those FIR's don't exist any more but the letters seems to have stuck as part of the location code for those places that had just a two letter identifier. eg: ML PH SY DN etc.

Thankfully, when I learn to fly there were no landing charges for GA at any locations in Oz.

My warped brain took "MML GA landing" to be "MMA GA landing" and anticipated the thread was a Centaurus style historic safety thread about a Western Australian F-28 that had an interesting arrival somewhere.

MML- Southwest Minnesota Regional Airport.
SSY- Mbanza Congo Airport, Angola.

Hands up those that live in Australia, are pilots and considering the nature of the original posters question don't know what/where MML & SSY stands for?? This ought to be good! -)

If you put in a flightplan that involves a landing at a major airport and are prepared to pay the fee and be happy with being at the end of the priority line then you should get to land there.
More chance now than in what we might call normal times due to present very low traffic levels. If you are not going to do a T&G or just backtrack for departure you may be asked where you are going to park and usually must show/advise that appropriate arrangements have been made and you must have an ASIC card. If you have passengers then an escort will be required.
At the end of the day, its just another runway! If you have the time and money and still wish to feed your ego, then go for it!! Once upon a time it was easy to drop off a pax upon completion of liaison with the airline concerned, but I don't know if it is still the same today. With high traffic levels being at the end of the line might mean over an hours holding??

As said previously, the use of MML etc only shows an ignorance of the system and how it is set up. The poster should have used either YMML/YSSY or MEL/SYD and much of the discussion would not have occurred.

What a great video, looks like a lot of fun. :)

I remember heading there in my youth for radar tours and Maccas runs!
