Interesting to see on the news last night the Frecce Tricolori overflying a deserted Rome to commemorate the country escaping the Nazi yoke towards the end of WW2. Would be nice if the RAFAT did the same over London on the 8th May.
Would raise spirits I think.
Any thoughts?

Keep safe all.

At the risk of opening a can of wriggly things. There were a lot of plans for VE day, and some will still go ahead, perhaps via video. However, as far as I know, the government had no plans whatsoever to celebrate the end of WWII. Perhaps Gen. Slim's "forgotten army" are still forgotten.

Nothing wriggly there, Herod, nothing wriggly at all. VE, VJ, both rather miss the point in my view. The point was the end of the War itself. Six long years of danger, deprivation, and death. Where the concept of a 'good war' came from I know not, but I'd bet a Pound to a Penny that to families and Forces alike the end came as blessed relief. To many of course it never came and for their families and loved ones it never ended. If we are to commemorate anything it should perhaps be VJ day, which truly was 'the end'.

Being brought up in a village adjacent to brokenlink's home there was a reluctance for any celebrations. The local regiment "The Cambridgeshires" had been captured in Singapore and little was known of their fate. In fact many had perished up the jungle on the railway whilst most of the survivors were still held prisoner in Thailand.

On a personal note my Uncle was still fighting in Gen. Slim's "forgotten army".

Herod and Chugalug,

You are both right. My father was a POW of the Japanese and I remember very clearly my mother telling me on VE day 1945, we can't celebrate yet because it is not over. However, for millions of Europeans 8 May 1945 was a blessed relief.
