Ladies and Gentlemen, Sqn Ldr Ron Salt, the last member of aircrew who put the spire atop Coventry Cathedral in 1962, has passed away this week.

He was an essentially modest man and attended the 50th anniversary in 2012.

The actions in completing the task in the gaze of publicity, taken with the rescue of the crew from a trawler aground off Land's End, probably did more for RAF PR than anything else at that time and both certainly were a great boost for the RAF helicopter world.

He was CHI at Trent Air Services, Cranfield. Not sure if he stayed on after Trent went bust and Cabair bought them out. I’d joined Trent just after I left the RN and enjoyed several evenings spent going from pub to pub on his immaculate canal boat. A true gent

I'm very late to this news and am sad to discover today that Ron has passed on at the age of 87. He was Chief Pilot of Ferranti Helicopters in the mid to late 70's up until 1979 when British Caledonian took over Ferranti. The Ferranti MD Bob Smith did not continue with BCAL and Ron had anticipated he would be made MD of the newly formed company, British Caledonian Helicopters. Sadly he was shabbily treated and that did not happen. It is indeed the same Ron Salt who worked for Airship Industries after he left British Caledonian. I had the pleasure and privilige of working and flying with him as one of his pilots from '74 until the takeover and I last spoke to him in 2007. Sadly missed and my condolences to Diana.
