Unemployed / Unpaid Leave / All Airline Staff

As a long term unemployed B 737 Captain (7 months) I appreciate that it is awful to loose your job or to be placed against your will on unpaid leave. Without doubt we are now looking at a crisis in civil aviation and society at large of potentially unimaginable proportions. As pilots we know that the initial reaction to a big event is startle effect (shock) followed by denial followed by coping behaviour based on drills and procedures. I would like to invite anybody working in the aviation industry in any role or job function that has lost their job or been placed on unpaid leave to send their CV to me at [email protected]. This is an old email address that I last used 17 years ago while working as a Recruitment Consultant and I must emphasise that I am not seeking a candidate pool to trade off other people misery for commercial gain. Rather I have a sense that if airlines do become insolvent that very soon there will be a global demand for aviation talent from every discipline and trade and that having a record of groups of talented people willing to work together to get things moving again may be of benefit to us all and of benefit to society. The aim of gathering data is not for anything other than the altruistic purpose of bringing together groups of aviation professionals who are otherwise unemployed or on unpaid leave and where there is an opportunity for them to do something productive and beneficial with their time. To bring talent together were they can possibly create aviation opportunity as a team for the benefit of themselves and society at large. Its hoped that the current basic airline corporate structure will survive and while soon aeroplanes will start flying again it maybe that many airlines will no longer be around to make that happen. In which case we need groups of people from the complete spectrum of aviation backgrounds co-operating and co-ordinating to create new growth and opportunity. An immediate example might be continuity recurrent training of furloughed crew. Can we bring airlines, simulator centres, TRIs TREs together to give furloughed crew the opportunity to do at least some simulator practice while on unpaid leave? There might be a surge of non-commercial humanitarian flight operations beyond the capacity of the existing cargo airlines and military air mobility assets. Whatever the opportunity if we can collect the data of the under employed and willing and get them working together that will be a step forward. Let’s become the go to group for people who want to get things done in aviation with the ability to form rapid teams working with goodwill and drive to make it happen.

I think sending your CV to one of the many different recruitment agencies out there, plus adding to a Linkedin profile might be a better idea.

Recruitment agencies look to place candidates with a company for a fee. They can only do this when the candidates skills are in high demand and there clients are actively recruiting. In these circumstances I would agree registering with an agency is a good idea. This is not the case right now nor will it be for the short to medium term. This is about getting people together to create opportunity for those that are currently unemployed or on unpaid leave and who right now despite their very high skill levels find that their services are not in any demand at all but who as collective group could be bought together for the public good in what is a fast changing and dynamic situation. This is a bespoke concept intending to get things moving for people who are currently in a deep hole but who could together make things happen this is not a young kid looking to take note of your hours rating date of last flight and mobile number in order to make a 10% placement fee by sending you somewhere you do not want to be.

If you’re serious about doing something as big as you suggest, I would say use a registered company subject to data protection laws, set up a website and ask our data there. You have to admit that in these times sending your personal details to some email address of a random guy on a chat forum is a stupid thing to do. In fact I wouldn’t do any business with somebody who would do that.

I think what you are suggesting is enviable. However in today’s world people are very skeptical and rightly so.

This situation is beyond belief and the tipping point for some could be the littlest thing.

Why not set up a quick webpage or give full disclosure on who you are etc. The generic thing just makes it harder.

Unless I knew who I was sending critical documents to for potentially life changing roles I don’t do it. In the past that included recruitment companies which I hadn’t done due diligence on and at least known someone to have used.
