"KEY POINTS• Effective from midnight Sunday, all travellers, except for those coming from the Pacific islands, will have to self-isolate for 14 days on their arrival to New Zealand
• The PM says the rules are the toughest in the world
• She told New Zealanders not to travel overseas if they don't have to and issued stark advice: no hugs, hongi or handshakes
• All cruise ships have been asked to not come to NZ until June 30
• There will also be further announcements on mass gatherings

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced all travellers will have to self-isolate on their arrival to New Zealand, apart from those coming from the Pacific Islands.

She said the measures - in effect as of midnight Sunday - include New Zealanders.

The restrictions will be reviewed in 16 days and there will be more advice for self-isolation next week. There were already clear guidelines for employers on sick pay and working-from-home advice."

What’s a hongi?

It's a Maori custom of touching of the noses

Ah yes I didn't realise they were still government owned. In that case you are correct. Probably a good tactical move in a time of crisis.

How the hell can anyone with a family self isolate? My question isn’t pitched at NZ.

Are there any penalties for not self isolating if one isn’t showing any symptoms? Obviously not in Australia with the PM not self isolating whilst another minister has been diagnosed.
I think it is great that politicians are catching it. These are the people in society who constantly put themselves above everybody else, are paid and receive perks that no other worker receives, live in their Government bubble and have no idea what is happening in the real world. Wait until the worlds finances collapse and there is a lawless society who are desperate for food and medicine - they won’t be safe from that either!

By looking at the results in Wuhan where the first wave seems to have well and truly peaked, I would imagine time wise these restrictions will probably last 6-8 weeks, but if the curve is indeed flattened and the infection rate doesn’t explode like China and Italy, this could go on for 4-6 months, Airline industry concerned prepare for a bloodbath...

Ha. Not likely to be next week. But only a fool in cloud cuckoo land can’t see the writing on the wall. If you believe that printing money for the past 20 years and having a debt that cannot be contained and will only end in default is good fiscal management, then there is no hope for you. There is a reset coming. Just a matter of when not if.

I have seen no such exclusion. Most pundits are putting money on near total cancellation of international flights into and out of NZ with the exception of some charter flights to move people who get stuck. Also rumours of the government putting a substantial capital injection into Air NZ which is nice for them but not great for all other airlines. Jetconnect and Virgin NZ will effectively be grounded with massive capacity cuts to Air NZ and Jetstar. Buckle in it’s going to be a wild ride.

Official document explaining NZ self isolation (dated 12 March 2020 and likely to be amended to include all visitors/returning people very shortly):

https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-novel-coronavirus-health-advice-general-public/covid-19-novel-coronavirus-self-isolation

”Self-isolation means staying away from situations where you could infect other people. This means any situation where you may come in close contact with others (face to face contact closer than 1 metre for more than 15 minutes), such as social gatherings, work, school, child care/pre-school centres, university, polytechnic and other education providers, faith-based gatherings, aged care and health care facilities, prisons, sports gatherings, restaurants and all public gatherings.

If you are a visitor to New Zealand, this means you should avoid sitting in a restaurant, or participating in any type of tour group.”

QF have about 20 Aircraft that rotate through NZ between JQ/QF. 75% of that is Kiwi based crews, the rest is Australian based crews, mainly A330.

Virgin has half dozen.

The concern for Alan is if they do the same here, its going to become very expensive.

Virgin is 80% domestic 737. Lucky they are about to start heavy checks in the Triple fleet also with pre arranged reductions for the next 6 months pre planned 2 years ago.

its proven that if you limit arrivals you flatten the curve and slow the onset of the disease in the community. Italy’s explosion of cases is partly due to slow reaction to implementing harsh measures. All cases in NZ are overseas arrivals.

There has been zero talk of a Government bailout... or if there has I highly doubt anyone posting on PPrune would have any knowledge of it.

I think there's a term for this but I can't remember what it is: what you are describing is the exact inverse of reality. It has actually been proven that limiting arrivals has no or even a negative effect. Italy was the first country in Europe to ban flights from China and as a result passengers switched to other Europe and Middle Eastern hubs. As no-one knew these people were originating from China they were not told to self-isolate so they did not. When they became sick they went to ER rooms and infected many other people. The mathematics of an epidemic then did the rest.

Better perhaps to just let infections happen as quickly as possible. NZ currently has 6 confirmed cases. 6. And we shut down the country. China is already opening stores and factories again.

Perhaps worth noting that Italy went from 4 cases to 17,660 cases in only 23 days (up to yesterday). Deaths are 1,200 in same period. Common sense suggests there is a tipping point from which health services are overwhelmed. This should be avoided at all costs and by all means.

Possibly the most silly post on a less than sensible thread. You are talking about killing possibly 3% of the population, and potentially a majority of the immunosuppressed, together with 0.7% of younger key workers such as CEOs, trainers, innovators etc which may in turn destroy whole companies and masses of jobs. This is not the same as flu.

NZ is trying to isolate itself from the rest of the world and if done early enough this might have worked. I hope it does even now but politicians have not done well to date and I fear it is too late. NZ will then need to introduce social distancing to reduce spread so their health system can sort of cope. Correction, they should have already done it. There will still be deaths but the expectation is that the attack rate (the number of infected people) will at the end be reduced to say 30% and this in turn will avoid a second or third wave as we saw in 1919.

All this is based on incomplete understanding of the virus; it is still early days in China and Singapore, we have no knowledge of mutation beyond the already identified S strain, and vaccines are not a given.

Time will tell, but the world economy will tank and unnecessary lives lost. Not a laughing matter.

Better perhaps to just let infections happen as quickly as possible

The point of social distancing isn't to stop infection, it's to reduce the peak and spread it out over a longer period so the medical system has a chance to cope.

italy is so bad because not only are they dealing with sick, but their medical frontline workers are getting sick too.

it's not the illness killing people, it's a lack of resources. 20% of infected in general will have a severe case. One problem is the constant reference to 'mild' cases. One Italian doctor clarified that 'mild' means anything short of supplemental oxy required. 'Severe' cases require assisted oxygen and critical need breathing support. Problem is, there's not enough machines/beds to go round and Italy are now having to triage patients according to who has the best chance of a quicker recovery so more people can be helped. They are literally having to choose who has a chance to live.

Distancing is to stop us/NZ getting to that point.

Unfortunately I fear we needed to start this two weeks ago. Every day makes a difference, so if it needs to start Monday, it should have been done on Friday.

I was initially a bit concerned about the idea of this, until I read today an Australian who travelled from France to Townsville last week. He was tested for COVID-19 while in Australia.

He then thought it would be a good idea to fly to NZ while still waiting for his results. While having breakfast this morning, confirmation of a positive result came through and is now isolated to a hotel room.

If people are that thick, that they think they should travel while waiting for test results, then keep them out.

(mind you, he was Australian)

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120300127/air-new-zealand-cuts-longhaul-capacity-by-85-per-cent

In part below

"As a result of the downturn in travel Air New Zealand continues to review its cost base and will need to start the process of redundancies for permanent positions acknowledging the important role partnering with unions has in this process.
"We are now accepting that for the coming months at least Air New Zealand will be a smaller airline requiring fewer resources, including people. We have deployed a range of measures, such as leave without pay and asking those with excess leave to take it, but these only go so far. We are working on redeployment opportunities for some of our staff within the airline and also to support other organisations".

Foran said the airline was working with the heads of the four main unions representing more than 8000 of its workforce to ensure the right outcome for all staff.

"I would like to thank the leadership teams at E tu, AMEA, NZALPA and Federation of Air New Zealand Pilots for the way in which they are engaging with the airline and positively representing the interests of their members. These are unprecedented times that we are all having to navigate. And it is clear that if we don't take all the appropriate measures to lower costs and to drive revenue, our airline won't be in the best position to accelerate forward once we are through the worst of the impact of Covid-19.""
