I've only flown through Alaska once, though I certainly saw many similarities with "bush" flying in Canada. More operational responsibility placed on the pilot, as there is much less ground infrastructure to rely on (the pilot becomes his/her own dispatcher). When I think of my flying in the far north of Canada, the only weather information for within 500 miles was to look to the horizon (or as far as you could see), or, if you're equipped, download a GFA map or satellite image via satellite phone.
So I accept the concerns expressed in the article, but like remote flying elsewhere in the world, without the traffic, the infrastructure costs to provide the more common pilot decision making information are hard to justify. I don't know if this is a problem with a fix....
