Just putting this out there as many that I have spoken to have never heard of this. It was recommended to me by a DAME. Same 2 year renewal applies for those over 40.

Note that this is NOT the drivers licence medical with the passenger restrictions on it.

https://www.casa.gov.au/licences-and-certification/aviation-medicine/classes-medical-certificates

Total pax 5, 8618 KG MTOW, piston engines only, Day VFR only, No aerobatics, Altitudes up to 10,000ft.

Important things to note:

If applicants unconditionally meet the standard (except for glasses and hearing aids), they will be issued with a Basic Class 2 medical certificate by CASA. If you do not meet the unrestricted Austroads commercial driving standard, you can still apply for a Class 2 medical certificate where you will be assessed by a DAME who has the ability to judge risk factors and consider health issues relevant to aviation.

My experience was:

- Log into the CASA portal
- Start the process by entering in the name of my GP
- Print the customised form that it gives you
- Tick the boxes about your medical conditions yourself
- Take to your GP (you'll need a double appointment most likely)
- GP comments at the end of each section (if needed), to verify what you've ticked is correct
- GP takes your blood pressure
- Quick eyesight check (you'd have to be half blind to fail it)
- Convince the doctor that you don't have any mental deficiencies, drug, alcohol or sleeping problems
- Get their signature on it (they should probably scan a copy afterwards)
- Go home and log back online
- Tick the box to say that you're done
- Print the medical certificate which is a CASA medical certificate with your doctors name on the bottom (I'm not sure my doctor would realise this)
- Pay the fee

(CASA never see the form as it doesn't get sent to them)

Doctor cost $75
CASA fee $10

Done. All over and issued within a couple of hours of starting it.

Yep, my experience late last year almost identical to yours.
As someone that struggles to see without glasses, I was most surprised to pass the eye test with flying colours.
My previous DAME medicals had a glasses to be worn and spare pair carried stipulation, now no caveats at all.

With a PPL cl 2 medical...why cant you do aerobatics???
At age over 75 I have to have a Drivers Licence medical, every year. Dr Check up and Optometrists report on yr peepers. I dont need glasses for driving..Have 1 dud ear but that has never denied me a PPL for 60 years
If thats yr case dont bother with the Commercial Drivers Licence medical its a WOFTAM. Failed on the hearing!. CDL was just a CAsA brain fart.
At the Docs did ecg and etc.. and nobody could access the CAsA website. She even rangup about it...and two days later got an email saying the site was down then.!!
So back we go again to complete all the rest and also specialist ticker box check. Plus the DAME Optometrist.
After all that frustration and expenditure AvMed then wanted a Stress Test and a MoCA test.
Stress test not reqd for PPL.. so back again to the Dame for the MOca test. Which is a bit of an insult really ..if you have a DL medical and can drive on the roads these days, you must obviously still have yr marbles.
Total cost all up about 1000 bucks all up
.
Now due all again as now deemed only good for one year PASS.!

AFAIK both Aeros and Formation flying are 'courses' for which you get an endorsement/approval to do, having passed the training. Dont see why they cant apply to a PPL

Nor does it appear that ‘spinning’ is permitted under the class 2 basic, as it’s a flight activity endorsement:

Some GP's might be a bit hesitant, especially those crazy procedural old school docs. My son went to do one last month, the old school Doctor said she has never heard of it, and was very hesitant in signing anything. She advised he go to a DAME. When he said she is essentially signing off a medical to fly an aeroplane she nearly fell over. The next appointment we found a Doctor I asked for a return phone call prior to going if they are able to do this. Took a few days to get back too me and one said no problem.

I guess there are not many GA Private pilots out there!

Had the same experience. First GP wanted to refer me to a DAME. Different GP was happy to sign off.

Booked mine today, will feedback to the thread.
Doctor is a DAME, not sure if he's done a basic before.

Basic Class 2 examination this morning with a DAME, done of the back of an employment medical ten days ago for some of the results. But expect you'd knock it all over in less than 30 mins otherwise.
For comparison, I also did a CAMS Competition License medical at the same time which required far more intrusive testing, including fasting bloods (last week) and an EEG (today).

C2 Basic seemed relatively straight forward, the DAME was familiar with the paperwork, which you need to download and take with you once you've started the process on the CASA portal.
Next step is to scan and submit the signed forms and send it off to CASA.

Let's see what happens

Did you read that on a form somewhere? I don’t recall having to do that... I just clicked that it was complete and the system issued me my medical via PDF file.

Squawk,
No - just assumed that would be what happens next...there was nothing done online in the surgery. Presume that AvMed would want a copy of the paperwork the doctor signed.
Unless he does it in the system afterwards? Will let you know what happens.... standby

By the way - ref post #11 - that was ECG, not EEG..

After you get home from the doctor, you log into the portal again and tick the box to say that it’s complete and you can then print out your medical which has the doctors pseudo signature on it.

CASA do not require you to send in the forms, this is because they are not really interested as to wether you are fit to fly or not, all they need is someone, i.e. your doctor, to blame if something goes wrong. Remember, the 'Safety' in CASA is not about aviation safety it is CASA's safety from litigation.

Spot on Squawk, exactly what was done.
Paid my $10 fee and am now the proud owner of a valid medical. Wonders will never cease, seems almost too easy to be true.
CASA actually made something better.

However, the DAME is a different story, I'm currently at war with them over the outrageous fees they wanted to charge as I did a concurrent motor sport competition license medical.
They seem to think this given them license to charge me twice. Also wanted 3 times the Medicare recommended fee for the ECG.
They've agreed to lop $150 off so far - still negotiating.
