Learned contributors,
I know Trans Meridian had U.K. registered series 30s
I.A.S. operated U.K. registered series 50s
and Lloyd International ordered 3 series 63CFs
Were there any modifications required to certify these aircraft in the U.K.? Dan-Air had to have stick pushers fitted to their Boeing 727s to achieve U.K. certification for example.

I don't know what mods. were required for the UK. IIRC the 2 DC-8s were srs. 54 from JAL.
I heard Mike Keegan bought the DC-8s so that once the crews were trained they wouldn't leave, whereas if he bought Boeing 707s there were lots of other operators offering jobs.

The 33 (ex KLM/Martinair/African Safari) appears to have only been service for a few months before joining Stansted's fire dump, presumably used for spares?

The rest seem to have been with various operators but not JAL (Dan-Air's first few 727s came from JAL).

No passenger DC-8's were ever registered for UK use, but Trans-lift bought DC-8-61's (on Irish register) which were used by UK tour operators.

British Midland and Court Line both looked at the DC-8 63 series for charter work and Transatlantic.

The DC-9 (another T Tail jet) had to have expensive Mods for entry on the UK CAA registry (British Midland being the first operator in 1976 using N reg at first)

I remember the days of lots of charter DC-8s at Gatwick.
Capitol, Trans International, Canadian Pacific/CP Air, World Airways, Overseas National, Southern Air Transport.

Me too! This thread has brought back a few memories. I always found the CP Air "Empress" callsigns somewhat evocative when listening in on my neighbour's airband radio, away from LGW. The colour scheme of CP Air was also very pleasing. It's all so bland these days, although much more efficient and cost-effective in operational terms, but I miss the variety, and dare I say it noise of the old days.

I recall an artist impression in Flight but the archive is closed.

From Flight International in 1969
Its present fleet of two Britannia 312s are leased from Lloyd International Airways (Hong Kong) Ltd, and it has also a DC-4 which is sub-leased to another carrier. The Hong Kong company has on order two DC-8-63Fs which will be leased to Lloyd International on delivery (August 1968 and May 1969 respectively). The two Britannia's are maintained by Aviation Traders (Engineering) Ltd under a contract effective until 1972.
its 1968 transatlantic passenger charter operations of 70 one-way revenue flights,using three Britannias, will produce passenger revenue of$738,200, and a net operating profit of $108,032. In 1969, with 110 one-way revenue flights, the relative figures would be $1,168,000 and $177,736. It is proposed to operate also one DC-8 in 105 one-way revenue flights in 1969; passenger revenue from this operation would be $2,371,400, and net operating profit $595,554. The total revenue from four proposed one-way cargo charter flights is estimated at $35,000. Charter operations on the limited scale requested would be useful in filling ferry legs arising from transatlantic charter operations.
But Lloyd was refused a British licence to operate these services. Base is London (Stansted) Airport.
Lloyd went on to acquire 3 707's from 1970.

Don't remember it but J Arthur Dixon may well have been the publisher.
