The A320 family also recently surpassed the B737 family in sales. The B737 still leads in terms of deliveries but taking into account that the B737 family had a 20 year headstart these are really challenging times for Boeing. The decade long delivery time is probably the only reason (with very high discounts from Boeing) that there are not more cancellations.

FlyDubai seems to get jumpy...

The B737 is really on its last legs and will certainly be killed off once the MAX debacle is over and Boeing have a new type available.

The A320 in NEO form can easily go another 20 years as the basic platform is still perfectly useable, updating the flight deck and flight control systems should be Airbuses next move.

isn't this smoke and mirrors with Emirates A330 NEO cancellations quietly ignored and this A350 order only replacing the 66 airframes cancelled some years ago?

The latest Emirates order includes 40 A330NEO. When was their order for the A330NEO cancelled?

Those weren’t firm orders: 30 A350 options and 40 A330neo options resulted in 50 firm A350 orders.

Thanks for the link Dave. I notice on the same page that Tim Clark says the A330 is still in the mix, possibly to be taken up in 5 years time or so.

Unless that new type is nearly off the drawing board, airlines are stuck with the 737 and it's variants that they have purchased or ordered for very many years to come.
737 MAX or whatever boeing rename it, will now always be the elephant in the room when airlines consider new orders.

Two comments, if I may.

Tim Clark is an absolutely unique man. In just 20 years he's managed to put Emirates in a position where manufacturers develop aircraft models and variants exclusively or almost exclusively for it. And the moment he got into that position he immediately destroyed that trust with both manufacturers by his eratic Airbus orders and giving Boeing false hopes about 777-8. Some people just don't know when it's time to retire.

As for Boeing 737MAX, the only reason it still has orders is the fully booked A320neo assembly lines. As soon as Airbus opens the two additional lines, we'll see MAX's orders plummet like a lead zeppelin. If even Southwest say they are "considering other types", others can't be far behind.

I wonder what they will rename it? "737 Stone" and "737 Brick" roll off the tongue nicely.
