Anyone got any info on what seems to be an new commercial training outfit operating out of Perth? Tried their website address as advertised in Pilot, but there's nothing there. Assume they're something to do with Tayside Aviation.

They could be filling a big gap in Scottish based commercial aviation training, so keen to hear if anyone's had any experience of them.

I converted my Oz/USA ATPLs to the local variety with them about a year & a half ago.

I was very happy with the service & price. No attitude of "...you will have to fly a certain minimum number of hours...xxxx in a sim at $$$$ + yyyy in the twin at even more $$$$.....then we'll assess you to see what needs to be done.....etc etc..."

They were quite happy to let me decide what I thought I needed, provided feedback on UK 'twists' to procedures etc.

The only - slight - complaint was that I would have preferred a bit more briefing about the UK's procedures & expectations. To a small extent my lack of UK familiarity meant that I had a little of of trouble not knowing what it is that I didn't know so I could ask the correct questions.

However, they were more than happy to let me borrow their AIP & approach charts etc so I could do my own study.

All OK in the end. Total time for the pre test training (really just famil. with UK methods) + GFT + IR was 9.5 hrs in their very nice Seneca.

Les Welsh, the owner, is a nice bloke.

Tayflight were only just moving into their own offices when I was there. Previously they used the aeroclub/Tayside's building for flight planning etc.

Perth is very convenient for IR training with various approaches close by, a CAA examiner based on the field (also a good bloke), cheap on-field accommodation with meals available etc. There's even a bus to the town that stops at the aerodrome gates.

Most importantly there's an aerodrome bar available!

I'd choose to go there again if I were doing it a second time around.

Tayflite are not affiliated in any way to Tayside Aviation although we share the same airfield. Unlike Tayside, they are primarily a specialist IR company and a very good one by all acounts. They've just spent some serious money on an absolutely cracking looking state-of-the-art sim in the last couple of weeks, a mate of mine is doing his IR on it at the moment and can't stop raving about it.

Perth is also a great place to do your IR, because there's not that many IR test routes you could get on the day and so you can practice them all numerous times in advance - and trust me, scottish airfields/airways are a damn sight easier to deal with than that $%&* London TMA which I had to navigate when I did my IR at Cranfield!!

I know 3 guys who have done their I/R at Tayflite. They all thought that it was a good company. A lovely Seneca which is highly maintained and well looked after and by all accounts their new sim is a nice piece of kit!

P.S They were all first time passes too!

This is where I'm planning to do my CPL/IR also. I'll be taking a trip to down to see them and have a look round sometime this week, possibly tomorrow if the weather is half decent.

Many of the chaps at my local flying club have used them and I have heard only positive feedback.

If your still interested e-mail me in a couple of days once I've had a chance to pop down and I'll let you know what I think.

Thanks UA, will drop you a line in a few days to see what you think. Must find out what they charge for a CPL/IR too.
