Omni Air hiring street captains ? A bit surprising if true (yep, spelled the company name incorrectly in title...can't fix...but you get the idea) :

Found this explanation from someone who must be an OAI pilot:

"The website does not say, but I am betting this is for the 76. We have gained two aircraft within the last two years and have two more coming in 2020 (from an previous fleet size of 9) . The company has gone through the seniority list and have awarded upgrade to all who have their bid in and and meet the company qualifications. A lot of hiring has occurred in the last year and a half (since the new contract) so many of the FO's are new to the plane and/or company and realise that they may need a little more seasoning before moving over to the left seat, so many are bypassing. Training here is no joke and the attrition rate for upgrade is a valid concern. We have verbiage in the contract that will open up lateral moves to all in case of new hire captains, but we haven't heard a word from the company or union on this as of yet."https://www.airlinepilotforums.com/images/statusicon_new/user_offline.gif

Pretty amazing actually! Any news about how many hours the folks there are averaging per month? And are they in need of pilots with instructor background?

The only discussion I've seen is on this APC thread (the last few pages deal with the DECs) which you may have already seen. It appears some OAI pilots are commenting. Of course, it has some thread drift.

All the Omni guys I know seem pretty happy there.

A question about the effect of time on a DEC captain at OAI: they'll enter as very junior people on the list despite being a captain. As more FOs (people now bypassing upgrade) decide to take captain slots as they become available, will today's DEC end up as tomorrow's FO ? Will that prognosis be acceptable to the DECs ?

only if they run a true displacement bid by way of losing aircraft.

considering its home based with positive space tickets, its the better end of the DEC deals out there

Seems like this might be a slightly better deal than Atlas Prime?

Spooky2,

Could be. I still wonder how the long term prospects of life on tender hooks as a captain at the very bottom of the seniority list would compare to what a person might give up to jump to OAI to take this offer. Varies with the individual, I guess, like most stuff.

Pretty interesting development, I mean DEC's are not exactly unheard of, as a matter of fact DEC's are the norm in many parts of the world but in the biggest market that produces pilots, to start to see DEC's into widebody operations is very significant.
What is even more interesting is that the majors don't seem too worried about the pilot supply since they haven't done very much into investing in pilot production.

Will we ever see DEC's at major carriers? A few years ago "never" would have been the answer, now I'm not so sure that we can say that it will never happen!

I don't think we'll ever see DEC's at the majors. They will have plenty of experienced FO's.

I tend to agree with The Range on this. I didn't see anything about how many DECs OAI intends to hire but I bet they'll be flooded with applications for what is likely a small(ish) number.
