With the recent suggestions of expansion into Southend and presumably other gateways in Europe I thought it might be useful to have a thread to outline the current network and any future expansion news or rumours can go in this thread.

The current network is centred on hubs around the DHL network who they appear to be hubbing with in USA too with a sizeable hub at Cincinnati. East Midlands, Leipzig and Cologne all feature heavily. The majority of the European network is operated by ASL Group with six aircraft, with two routes operated by DHL/EAT.

ASL are currently operating - all with B737-400F
Cologne-Milan MXP, Madrid, East Midlands
Leipzig-Paris CDG
East Midlands-Madrid-Milan MXP-East Midlands
Hanover-East Midlands-Milan MXP-Hanover

DHL also operate two trunk routes with B757-200F
East Midlands-Leipzig, Madrid

It was recently announced that ASL Group have ten B737-800F coming soon - my thinking is it's likely to be these that will kick start the growth of the European network for Amazon flying, probably introducing the brand to the flying too as currently they all fly in plain white or company liveries. It is interesting to note that the Amazon flights currently fly during the daytime hours and also operate seven days a week, which the large integrator networks usually only operate weekdays 4 or 5 days a week and usually overnight too. This should allow use of existing freighter aircraft that are normally idle during the day giving better utilisation rates. It will be interesting to see whether the 738s on order for ASL are used in this way.

It will be interesting to see if the proposed SEN operation is a daytime schedule.

Expressflight said the following on the Southend thread (post #3554)

Cargo flights are not exempt from the night limits and the flight schedule that I've been told for this operation would use around 90 of the 120 monthly night slots.

I guess it depends what they define as night hours... for example the first departures from EMA are 0500 and 0530, and they also have an arrival at 0500. If they class night as 0001-0559 (tel:0001-0559) for example then these could use up some of those slots. Either way it's only 3 a day as Amazon's tend to run to a 7 day schedule.

I'll just recap on what I have heard in the past three weeks.

Originally it sounded to me as if the planned 'night freight' operation was going to be connected with Brexit contingency planning and would be relatively short term; that it would run from the middle of October for a month or two. It then became apparent that a lot of work was being put into converting the old Inflite hangar at SEN into an air freight handling facility capable of long term use. This news generated reports that it was for one of the international on-line consumer goods delivery companies. Amazon's name was mentioned together with the 'information' that two daily flights by B737-400F would be involved, with probably at least two daily movements being during the night period. Staff are now being recruited by Stobart to operate this cargo facility so something along those lines seems to be the case.

I've heard nothing more in the past week and perhaps this new thread will lead to more specific details emerging.

ASL appear to have started another schedule route for Amazon this weekend with the ABR1551/2/3/4 circuiting most European hubs on a EMA-LEJ-MXP-MAD-EMA routing...

Quick question with a sorting facility basically on airport grounds, could we see a flight to MAN?

Appears to be another two possible Amazon routes started recently. ASL France operating both, CDG-Hanover and CDG-Istanbul? Anyone know if these are both linked to Amazon... Istanbul would be a new place for the network though!

Very interesting thank you
It appears 1255/6 CDG-LEJ-CDG (operated by ASL France), 1470/1 EMA-CGN-EMA and 1537/8/9 HAJ-EMA-MXP-HAJ are still running at the moment though I guess the 1537/8/9 will replace MXP with CDG?
1480/1 currently operated by Cargologic Germany - they have two other B734 spare so I wonder if some routes will be operated by these.
ASL had signed for 10 B738BCF but no sign of any in conversion yet - lease company GECAS have potentially 9 more in conversion but likely these are for Amazon USA (Sun Country the latest contractor).

ABR1737/8 SEN-MAD rotation has been moved to BCN in the last week or so, thereby covering one of these routes. ASL currently have two B734F on lease potentially freeing up others to start new routes?
