Are there any perks still left to this job? Apart from getting a 1.5 litre bottle of water and having my ready meal heated in the oven in the oven for free? Gone are the days of staff travel etc.

There are plenty of airlines out there with decent staff travel coverage around the world. For me it is the best perk!

Only one- no in tray to overflow !
Free chocolates, lots and lots of free chocolates :) First Class confirmed staff travel, wonderful food, no booze, 5-6 star hotels, whats not to like :)

I was told in a certain EU LCC you only get the bottle, not the water? You have to fill up your own tap water in the crew room?

perks of the job? Well there are plenty.
- excellent views
- seeing the world from a different perspective
- international atmosphere
- coffee is only one click away
- almost never having to drive in traffic to work because of the odd working hours
- controlling a multi-million machine
- staff travel or commuting options
- outstanding salaries compared to average office jobs
- no call on standby days = extra day off
- in general way less working days then an average office job in a year
- highly responsible job with the power and abilities to make a difference when it actually counts
The job is as good as you make of it. Lots of us loose sense of how hard other people work for their money... Happy landings and safe flying. Just enjoy the small things.

Generally it depends on which company you work for. In the ME it refers to the 100 other nationalities of pilots you work with.

He is asking if there are any perks of a airline job. Off course you can compare that to any other job. That's the whole point. We are not comparing T&Cs between airlines here..

My girlfriend works 5 days a week 8 hour days for 1/5 of my salary. Her holiday allowance is smaller than mine and her pension contributions are minimal. The airline I fly for may not have the best Ts and Cs but it's a whole lot better than hers. Does that mean I settle when it comes to union negotiations? No. Does that mean I appreciate what I have and what life could be otherwise. It absolutely does.

As an airline pilot You are paid for the responsibilities you are taking on a daily basis and for the level of skills you are required to demonstrate each and every flight. “An office job” is absolutely incomparable as there are “office jobs” with very high responsibilities and very well paid (think about a lawyer of a major company facing a court case for several million dollars and with possible jail term risks) and the office job of a secretary of your local rent a car.

It’s not a perk. It’s an integral part of the requirements in terms of renumeration for the skill and effort and investment put in.
The view is a perk, that sort of thing.
It seems mostly the perk amongst Generation Y/Z is getting to put a “ posing with stripes “ picture on face plant, instattentionseeker etc..

Yes there are better paying office jobs. Not many you can reach by 'only' putting 40-50 hours a week in. Getting those top paid jobs requires a lot of hard work and lots of old school friends work anywhere between 50 and 70 hours a week try to make a living and a potential career. And even after putting in all those hours they still will be on about half of what I make by the time they reach their career goals.
And no, I don't settle for union negotiations. I am realistic though. We have a fantastic career, good perks and relatively low amount of working hours a year round. Especially for such a good paid job.
Enjoy what you have. It will make work a lot more fun.

I work for one of American Airlines wholly owned regionals. We get free standby travel on any AA flight - with an app thet lets us check loads and list ourselves. Free travel also applies to partner, kids, & 2 parents (own, in-laws, any combination). Same priority as AA mainline, too. AA doesn't use seniority to grab flights - it's via check-in order. Up to 6/yr higher seating priority flights too.
We also get buddy passes, at a slightly lower seating priority at imputed tax cost.
Cheaper hotels (at the rate the company pays) & other accom. deals, car rental, discounts, a bunch of shopping deals incl. cars.
The oppressive, zero personal freedom and zero human rights attitude in some parts of the world? I'm sorry but are you talking about the EU or the USSR?
Anyway I'm sitting here enjoying my chocolates.
