Sad to report the passing of Air Marshal Sir Frederick Sowrey, known to many as 'Bent Fred'. He was just short of his 97th birthday and still very sharp, when I saw him performing in mid-June. He died on Tuesday morning in hospital having, I think, had a fall at home.

Freddie was one of life's true gentlemen and doubtless the national press Obit writers will be on the case very soon. In retirement he was active in many spheres and was a driving force in the RAF Historical Society, of which he was a life vice president.

Sad, but inevitable. A remarkable Officer and Gentle Man. Enjoyed meeting him a couple of times at RAF Historical Society meetings. RiP

Very sad news but as has already been said inevitable. I spoke to him a short while ago and was amazed at how active he still was looking after his farm, having broken his neck a year or so back. A truly kind and caring gentleman and an excellent leader of men. Rest in Peace Sir your course is run and you will be greatly missed.

Tiller - if you are the Duggie Barr I recall, greetings from Vic Wightman/Mike Smith's student on 22 Gnat course

Within the sadness of the announcement, much humour at the thought of Dougie Barr in a Gnat. An amazing organiser however of 46, even if not of himself. Shirt studs anybody?

Different Dougie Barr I assume

Tiller,

It's true - I wouldn't post something like that, if not sure.

I am on the committee of the RAFHS and I have the news from his family.

RIP Sir. I once was to take him to a function from Aden to Bahrain in an Argosy. It was a VIP flight but Bent Fred insisted on flying the aircraft both there and back. I hope the faint smell of gin on the rest of the crew wasn't noticeable.

Thanks LL, a life of service and well spent. Not many 90 year olds get a chain saw for their birthday present!
